Wasn't looking to call you out on an error or anything, I was genuinely curious who was charging and paying $450 for a conceal-carry class! I might be looking to change my line of work! ;-)
From the numbers you posted, looks like we paid about the same. Guessing you're ex-military and didn't need the 8 hour course. Neither of us is ex-military so we paid $150 each which included range time and ammo. I thought $300 total was a pretty good deal. The extra $300 for the permits I think is more than a bit pricey, but I'll pay it to be able to carry and protect myself.
The instructor we had was recommended by several friends and we thought he was very thorough. He even included the NRA basic pistol safety course at no extra charge. I thought that he did a great job presenting that course. I'm more of a rifle/shotgun person having grown up in the country and hunted for food and sport. Handguns up to the last few years weren't really my thing.
There were 8 total people in our class. The instructor intentionally keeps his classes to 8 or less in order to give each "student" the personalize/hands on time they need. When he asked each of us why we were taking the class, beyond the obvious everyone wanting to protect themselves, for me the answer was simple: I'm partially disabled and I can't physically run to escape trouble or get out of harms way. If I'm getting shot at or am in danger, I don't have a choice but to stand my ground and protect myself.
My carry is an HnK Compact 9mm. Wife's is a Taurus Ultralite 38.
I am indeed ex military, USMC. My daily piece is either an XDS in .45 or an SP101 with .38 spl +P. Mrs L is looking at a Kimber Ultra Carry in .45. Man do I love that woman!
We did ours at Article II in Lombard. The classes were well run to my mind. I actually ended up assisting in the range portion. How can one fail that test using a .22 revolver with a 6 inch barrel? Some guy did, tho.
Got his clock cleaned by his girlfriend. She put 30 out of 30 in the ring for a perfect score.
