‘Point Break': The enduring appeal of Zen garbage (Hollywood remake alert)
Washington Post ^ | 27 May 15 | Justin Wm. Moyer

In 1991, what appeared to be a serious movie was released by 20th Century Fox, a serious movie studio. The movie, “Point Break,” featured two serious movie stars, Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves. It was helmed by serious talent Kathryn Bigelow, who would become the first female director to win an Academy Award (for “The Hurt Locker,” in 2008). It cost serious money — $24 million — and made very serious money, grossing more than $80 million dollars. And now, it’s getting a 100 percent serious $100 million remake, the trailer for which was released Tuesday (here).

Yet, “Point Break” was transparently ridiculous.

Plot: Reeves is Johnny Utah, a curiously named FBI agent who must go undercover as a surfer to infiltrate a gang of surfer-bankrobbers led by Swayze, a.k.a. Bodhi — short for bodhisattva, an enlightened being in Buddhism. Though it is Utah’s mission to apprehend Bodhi, he falls more than a little in love with the man, who robs banks wearing a Ronald Reagan mask, and his pseudo-Zen lifestyle.

I wonder who will reprise Anthony Kiedis part?

Perhaps John Kerry? He's also apparently quite good at overreacting to a minor wound. In his case, a piece of rice embedded in the derriere.

In L.A., there was a long running play version of the movie. Every night they’d randomly pick someone out of the audience and hand them a script to play the Keanu part. Never went but friends told me it was hilarious.

This was one of my favorite movies growing up. They seriously need to leave it alone.

I watched it once to see why it was on TV all the time. It blew chunks. But then, I suppose there are people who liked “Sahara”.

Like you, I've seen Point Break 100 times and will watch anytime I run across it.

There's just something about it. The surfing scenes are done well. It has an unusual cast combination and they all gave good performances - including Gary Busey (who is obviously not from our planet :).

I agree that it was an entertaining, if over-the-top, movie about adrenaline addiction. I doubt that the re-make will be as good.

(It wouldn't surprise me if Hollywood starts re-making infomercials-Oxyclean the sequel... Sham Wow II-They are so out of ideas.)

A movie only has to be one thing to me....not boring. If it can hold my attention for an hour and one half or two hours, it's a good film. So what if Point Break has a lot of screwy parts. It's still fun to watch.

The guy who slammed the movie probably thinks My Dinner With Andre was the height of 20th century filmmaking.

Exactly. Not every film out there needs to be Oscar-caliber. Sometimes I just want to see gunplay, car chases and stuff blowing up. And as a 22-year old male in the summer of '91, that's all I wanted to see.

And that's the demographic this remake is going for.

The reviewer uses the word “serious” so many times that I think he can’t be “serious”. Shirley he knows this.

Point Break was ridiculous.

But it's still a great flick. An all time classic in my book, despite its flaws.

That scene starting in the airplane where Utah goes after Bodi is just epic.

They did a good job of hiding the stuntman's parachute. After repeated viewings, it's obviously under the shirt he was wearing but when we first saw it, it was impressive.

Today, they'd just digitally erase it out.

In '91, Point Break really raised the bar in filming action scenes, especially stuff like parachuting and surfing where you didn't get too many takes to get it right.

One of the funniest plays around — exact script from the movie, but turned into complete comedy. Someone from the audience plays Johnny Utah, just reading lines from cue cards (so he’ll sound just like Reeves). Must see if you get a chance:

My wife and I are laughing about this. She just said, “It really was just perfect the way it was.”

Where are they gonna get another Patrick Swayze?

Don't forget A League of Their Own.

Petty was actually pretty good in that film.

They didn't even bother trying. From the looks of the trailer, the Bodhi role in the remake has gone to some lisping, European metrosexual.
