It was mites that was causing CCD. It is part of the natural cycle but thanks to those nasty chemical / pharmacy companies we now can dust for mites and mitigate the effects.

Orchards are starting to install mason bee hives because they will work in colder temperatures while the honey bees are sitting around their hives shivering.
As with everything in life there are trade offs. The mason bees don't produce enough honey to harvest and they do not travel far so you can't hire them. Still cheaper then hiring the guy with the ladder and paint brush to pollinate your trees.

I live in a farming community that depends on the activities of the bee. bee hive failure is a big problem right now it is not imaginary. I wont pretend to know all the causes but I do know that the problem started in the last 30 years there are lots of theory on what is going on some say it is a mite the be bees are catching another idea is that a lot of the pesticides the farmers are using is the cause. I think it is great that Morgan freeman is doing this. hopefully his sanctuary will be a place that real science can be done to figure out solutions rather then a nut job group trying to pass laws to combat a problem that at this point needs to be studied.

What are the primary crops grown where you live?
I live just out of Fresno CA in the town of Visalia. there are a lot of almonds in the area lots of fruits oranges, cherry’s I moved here from Los Angeles about a year and a half ago but I grew up in Montana and the only industry in that state is farming and cattle. the central valley has just about everything growing here and it is really sad because the State of California is destroying the farming here through bad water management. we are more concerned with building a bullet train then providing water for farming.
My main gardening interest is tomatoes, sweet peppers, corn, and asparagus, which are self pollinating, or do not need pollination. Also cucumbers (need pollination help) and beans(which can self pollinate.) I guess asparagus does need insect help, but I only deal with it as a transplant of a perennial plant.
Had to laugh at that one my self. Our main road going to the ranch house is 4 and 1/2 miles from the South main gate to the house. A little over 8 miles if you come in from the North gate and 6.3 from the East gate.

Tax write off as bee farm??
I was hoping someone would mention mason bees. They are proven better pollinators and anyone can have a small mason bee house - not bigger than a bird house- in their yard. you can hang it up on a garage or shed. There is a great short documentary on a website called Growingagreenerworld.com. I saw it last summer. Well worth watching. We kept 5 honey bee hives for years, it is work. Plus we didn’t need all that honey.
It is for tax purposes and being eligible to apply for farm subsidies.
Unless he got the bees and equipment for free...I'm guessing he used his own money to buy them...
I'm not aware of any government program that gives bee farming equipment away...but you never know...

The bees know where their hives are.
by careful management and establishment of new colonies by splitting existing colonies, the bees can be maintained on the property. Of course the bees can stray to adjacent properties in their collection work but return to the hive to deposit their loads.
Also we do not know how many colonies the man has. For PR purposes, only one is actually needed. I live on a half acre lot that has been a be sanctuary since about 1975. Alas there are no existing colonies here now.
