It’s almost certainly self inflicted. The best bet would be to look at what was carved into his arm. There are a limited number of ways a person could do that to themselves, and none of them are the same as another person could do.

And somebody that dim, likely bought spray paint at a nearby store, not realizing that spray paint sales are monitored to identify vandals.
