Report: US hostage policy to allow families to pay ransoms

In a softening of longstanding policy, the Obama administration will tell families of Americans held by terror groups that they can communicate with captors and even pay ransom without fear of prosecution -- part of a broad review of U.S. hostage guidelines that will be released Wednesday.

President Obama ordered the review last fall after the deaths of Americans held hostage by Islamic State militants. The families of some of those killed complained about their dealings with the administration, saying they were threatened with criminal prosecution if they pursued paying ransom in exchange for their loved ones' release.

...with the added bonus that terrorists can now make a decent living.

Hostage taking already pays the drug cartels more than the drug sales do.

This should severely decrease the numbers of people abducted and held for ransom. This prez is brilliant, and makes wise choices that insure the safety of Americans everywhere.

“But if it was your loved one, would you like to be shut out of the dealings in favor of some bureaucrat?”

Now that bureaucrat can wash his hands. Just pay them!

And, imagine a fake hostage situation being used to funnel (launder) money to ISIS or Boku Haram.

Help me out here... I’m kind of torn on this issue. Shouldn’t the families of hostages be free to deal with the terrorists in any way they deem necessary? Must they depend on the gov’t?

In other words, Obama won’t enforce the law. Just standard operating procedure.

Expect more Americans to die because of this....something Team Obama will ignore.

You cannot depend on .Gov to save you, or someone you love.

The rest is up to you.

I agree 100%.

This is actually government surrendering a little power. It sounds like a positive step to me.

Me too.

White House is now encouraging hostage-taking for ransom, great job....

So punishing the families for trying to save their loved ones when the gov't doesn't do anything to help actually discourages hostage-taking?

A backdoor way of Obama helping to fund the bad guys. “Grab Americans, we’ll make sure you can collect on the hostages unimpeded.”

You both are correct about the surrender of power, however the purpose is to deflect blame from an America hating Feral Government to the victims and their families.

I'll leave God to judge the motives.

What, no EHBT card issued to subsidize ISIS? Small steps first I suppose.

Not punishing families is very different than announcing to the world that they should go ahead and kidnap Americans for ransom.

[ I guess the president needs to issue Letters of Mark against those who practice this kidnapping for ransom against US Citizens. ]

Well, that would be a NO.....
