GOP leaders retreat in fight with rebels

House GOP leaders and their allies retreated on Thursday, backing off efforts to punish conservative rebels who had bucked leadership on a trade vote.

Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) said he was reinstating Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) as a subcommittee chairman, just a week after he stripped him of his gavel for voting against leadership and failing to pay party dues.

And hours earlier, House GOP freshmen balked at a plot to sack their class president, Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.), for defying leaders amid complaints he’s been ineffective at his job. All the backpedaling was an embarrassment for GOP leaders, including Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), who just a day earlier had publicly endorsed Chaffetz’s decision to strip Meadows’s gavel. Both Meadows and Buck are members of the House Freedom Caucus, whose co-founders cheered Thursday’s developments.

“I think what it really means is that maybe our message is finally getting through some very thick skulls,” said one Freedom Caucus co-founder. “When you have a crisis in a family, you don’t exile people, kick people out. You have to communicate better as a family.”

Throughout the week, Freedom co-founders griped to Chaffetz and GOP leaders about Meadows’s removal as chairman. The message was clear: “This is not helpful.”

But it was a GOP conference rule that ultimately helped Meadows win his job back.

“He’s only listening to a small group of people who are very vocal around him, who don’t reflect the values of the constituents of the Republican Party.”

Aint that the truth!

They’re not leaders, they’re just in charge.

Any time our elected representatives are expected to “fall in line” with a party vote, we have lost our republic.

Our representatives are elected to *represent* us. What a concept! They are not elected to march lockstep with Boehner, 0vomit, the party, the lobbyists, or anyone else. Boehner should be charged with treason for subverting and extorting our representatives.

The heart of the Freedom Caucus may be in the right place, but I believe he is still implying that everyone should just “make nice.” I want my representative to represent me, not “go with the flow” or “make nice in the family”.

My rep isn’t part of this or the Republican Study Committee. I’m so disappointed.

If you’re not a part of the rebellion, you’re a part of the problem.

Or maybe behind bars like his republican predecessor?

Seriously, Boehner is a drunken philanderer who has been compromised, corrupted, and probably blackmailed. The sooner he goes, the sooner the corruption ebbs.

Boehner is a leader like a balsawood rubber band powered model plane is a 747. Both will fly, but like the balsawod model both are fakes.

I would never have dreamed I would ever think this way, but if the democrats could force Boehner out and put a democrat in, I would not care. Boehner is the most effective democrat ever in the office.

Not good enough. Boehner and McConnell need to be removed from their positions of authority.

How did a former Dukakis campaign chairman like Chaffetz get “in charge”?

We’re Americans, we don’t need “leaders”. We by nature, are not followers. What we need are CEO’s to keep the business running and someone with a spine to protect the Constitution.
Instead, what we have are a bevvy of cowards and scoundrels who open themselves up to blackmail and dip their hands in everyones pockets.

Not from MY language.

Or resist.
The only question is, how?
