Churches Could Lose Tax Exemption Over Gay Marriage

Lost in the celebrations over universal gay marriage, like abortion, being deemed a right found in the “penumbras and emanations” of the Constitution is the chilling effect the ruling has on religious liberty. In a telling exchange between the Obama administration’s Solicitor General Donald B. Verrilli, Jr. and Justice Samuel Alito, detailed by Tom Blumer at Newsbusters.com, in which Verrilli admitted that churches could lose their tax exemptions if they refuse to perform gay weddings:

Justice Alito: Well, in the Bob Jones case, the Court held that a college was not entitled to taxexempt status if it opposed interracial marriage or interracial dating. So would the same apply to a university or a college if it opposed same-sex marriage?

General Verrilli: You know, I don’t think I can answer that question without knowing more specifics, but it’s certainly going to be an issue. I don’t deny that. I don’t deny that, Justice Alito. It is it is going to be an issue.

Churches Could Lose Tax Exemption Over Gay Marriage

And then pray tell, what will you threaten them with to force obedience to your morality?

If the church loses its tax exemption then the pastor will be free to speak on political issues.

It’s worth it.

Make your tithe a gift. You can gift the church $28,000 per year.

It's not tax-deductible, but it's a way around the gay supremacists.

Morality. The art of loving and respecting others and honoring them.

Immorality: The art of throwing off all concerns for others and taking and dishonoring

You know, morality is easy to teach once a person is ruined emotionally over the immorality in their relationships, employment and daily life. You don’t have to force morality, it is a natural occurrence. Immorality needs to be taught

I've long questioned the spirituality of tax exemption for religious organizations. Worldwide Church of Satan. Islam. Church of the Spaghetti Monster.

Seems to me a "church" should just stand by its fidelity to truth. It's gotten too corporate. Too big business. Charlatans like Joel Olsteen have become multimillionaires off of sham religion and have consequently become influential in politics.

"In the temple, and at home, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus as the Christ." Acts 5:42

Let's get away from the entertainment oriented Sesame Street presentation of a feel good message and become what God demands. We don't need tax exemptions, income producing property, etc, to do that.

That's what concentration FEMA camps are for.

Except for most congregations of the United Church of Christ, the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A., the Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Unitarian Universalist Association, the Society of Friends, the Episcopal Church, the Conservative Jewish Movement, and the Reform Jewish Movement. Plus others that will eventually jump on the bandwagon. These will constitute the “established religion” of the United States.

No. First they lose the tax exemption, then they are arrested for hate speech. Still worth it for those serving God, but the Gay Nazis cannot see that.

Agreed...they don’t realize they’ve opened Pandora’s box. If they come after the Church the tyranny will be obvious and have consequences bigger than they could possibly imagine. If they take away tax-exemption we will be able to speak freely.

...the fact that we have “freedom of speech” and “freedom of religion” and yet we can’t “speak freely in the Church” is very telling. The power to tax is the power to destroy. The Church is not subservient to the government, even if a Church does not apply for 501-c3, it is still not required to pay taxes. You do not need permission to exercise a right, as was the case prior to the 501-c3. Just because the government decided to create it doesn’t mean the Church has to do anything with it.

Pastor post a sign: I do not preform marriages in this Church/building.......

But he can find a pastor of another Church to preform the ceremony......Reciprocate among the Churches, and shut your mouth..

The key word in this is "I".

I am not sure that the ruling elite would be happy having churches participating in elections directly. So probably they won’t lose their tax status.

Boy, they don’t want to go there. Seriously.

First it will be imprisonment, later it will progress to execution. If you want to see America’s probable intermediate term future, look no further than post-revolution Cuba and China.

Simple, just conduct marriage RITES or bestowing Sacraments. That is truly within the province of the Devine’s representatives. Wedding is a civil service. In fact, my church does not recognize a civil marriage as having received the church sacrament.

Churches could avoid this by requiring all who seek the blessing of holy matrimony to first get a civil license. Then the churches will be able to confir their blessings on those who meet the church’s requirements for the blessing.
