Republicans lose sight of reality
nydailynews.com ^ | june 29, 2015 | Richard cohen

If you’re old enough to recall how the landslide election of Lyndon Johnson over the hapless Barry Goldwater spelled the end of the Republican Party, or how Ronald Reagan’s election amounted to a revolution that put the Democratic party on the mat until — more or less — the end of time, then you will understand my caution in saying that while the Republican Party may well survive its recent difficulty, Republicanism itself is dead. I think.

The recent difficulties consist of taking the wrong side in the great health care debate, not only opposing what came to be called Obamacare, but refusing to produce an alternative. People are worried about their health and the party comes up with buffoons like Sarah Palin who invents death panels and trivializes the whole debate. Obamacare is not only the law of the land, it is the inevitable next step toward universal health care — just like most countries have, even the poorer ones.

The party’s other recent difficulty is being on the wrong side of just about every social issue you can think of. The Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage throughout the land and Republican after Republican stepped forward to denounce the decision and prattle on about what God intended — as if any of them know.

Some, like Chris Christie, reached for that hoary cliche about unelected men in black robes. Christie is hardly the first to discover the awesome power of the American judiciary and he turns out to be using the same language school desegregation opponents did in 1954. Then, too, an alleged horrible dictatorship of the judiciary was denounced — but the nation moved on.

Chris Christie - what a bad joke.
The Democrats might elect him, but conservatives will not.

Bobby Jindal might be worth my time, but TED CRUZ is the one to watch.

If only we were Democrats we’d be better Republicans.

Give me ownership of the schools.
Give me ownership of the MSM
Give me ownership of Hollywood.
Give me 50 years and a $Trillion or two to propagandize the American public to my point of view.

You would then find that my views of the social issues would be wildly popular.

“...but TED CRUZ is the one to watch.”

And he is the ONLY ONE who is standing and fighting...and the primary fight has yet to begin. Bush is a horror story of political cowardice and big RINO money. No fight.

I agree. The cream will rise to the top...and it may already have.

The “Constructive Republican Alternative Program”. (You can figure out the acronym for yourself.)

Yes, I guess we need to be transpartisan.

Reagan, as we know and National Review explores this, actually signed an abortion bill in the late '60s, he was wrong and tried to correct himself. Reagan became a pro-lifer, hence, they new article I see as wrong.

Since time immemorial, or at least the last 20 years, I suppose one could use this scare about social issues. Judges have imposed most same-sex marriage, then legislatures and I think only 2 public votes supported it.

Ah yes, Richard Conehead speaks. He KNOWS that the Republicans DID propose an alternative (insurance vouchers), which was quickly refused by Obama and the RAT party. What Mr. Conehead wants is universal BAD healthcare.

The homosexual agenda was never approved by voters. It was imposed on the people by homosexual judges (look at the California referendum and Massachusetts homo leftest).

When the country finally collapses (soon), it will be blamed all on you and the Rat party. I will see you on that day.

A quote I saw today from a Democrat, “Chris Christie running for President. Jesus. Every time another one of these jokers throws his hat in the ring, Hillary, rightly so, does a happy dance”.

... refusing to produce an alternative..."

In a nutshell. Endless show votes to repeal, knowing all the while there would never be enough votes to override a veto.

I have yet to hear the GOP produce any alternatives. Nothing; maybe repeal the Medical Device tax which would do nothing ti improve that crappy Bronze Plan I have.

"Leadership" has wanted to move on since they were able to ride in on the anger felt by the country. No cigarette or empty promise to call after they screwed us. Called us filthy whores as they zipped up their pants.
