As national debate rages about the Confederate flag, a peculiar installation of that controversial banner may be hiding in plain sight inside the cushion of Abraham Lincolns rocking chair, a replica that rests in a balcony box in the re-built Fords Theatre in Washington, D.C.
The theatrea functioning play space and a museumreopened in 1968, 103 years after President Lincoln died by gunfire in April of 1865 at the end of the Civil War while he watched a play there.
The builder of the replica chaira now-deceased craftsman named Carlton McLendonlived in Montgomery, Ala. and felt bitter toward the Union because two of his Confederate ancestors died in the four-year conflict.
Initially, McLendon resisted several requests by the Department of the Interior to build the chair but eventually relented and added a sly bit of unofficial interior decorating.
He included the Confederate flag, the very same banner that is currently under figurative fire since a white racist massacred nine black churchgoers with a gun two weeks ago in Charlston, S.C.

“If it isn’t true, it oughtta be.” Fake but accurate?
Do Southerners/Confederate descendants really call themselves Dixo-Americans?
Considering that he shared his little act of defiance with others it’s surprising that it stayed secret all these years.
And lest we forget: Clementa Pinckney (the Charleston pastor) voted for the confederate flag,
(He also voted against gay marriage).

Never heard it before.
Replica chair.
The real one is at Greenfield Village in Michigan.
I have heard the term ‘Confederate American’ used....
If I were sympathetic to the Confederacy, the last place I would put the flag is inside the seat cushion of the chair. It would make more sense to put the flag inside the back cushion.
I have heard the southern accent being described a Confederate accent.
Saw Lincoln’s theater box rocking chair many years ago. The bloodstains looked like they were fresh, a century later.
So....the replica chair will now be publicly burned in downtown Atlanta in a ceremony presided over by Al Sharpton (semi-joke alert).
The. confederate flag is part of our history and should be displayed in museums and used in reenctments. I do not see it appropriate to have the flag on active public display even at Confederate war memorials. We are Americans and the US flag should be the only flag on display. I similarly object to display of the rainbow gay flag on public buildings and found the rainbow lights on the White House to have been offensive and divisive

And you are correct. If you look closely at the lower left of the image, you can see him, amidst some clutter, edging (in a creeping fashion, consistent with his character) into the photo op.
I have heard the southern accent being described a Confederate accent.
Or a "Rebel" accent.
It's a little annoying.

“President Lincoln died by gunfire”
Dang that gunfire, always doing bad things.
Those “journalists” just can’t help using the “passive voice,” can they?
Interesting, I have never heard this before.
