The specter of John McCain was present at a recent meeting the Arizona’s Legislative District 2, as Precinct Committeemen moved to pass a resolution to close the Republican primaries. Despite his operatives’ best efforts the resolution vehemently opposed by McCain passed.
LD2 Chair Sergio Arellano, who told the group that he personally supported closed primaries, pleaded with attendees to delay the vote until Arizona GOP head Robert Graham could address the group. According to Arellano, Graham, who was in France, wanted the group to refrain from voting on the resolution until he could talk them out of it.
Arellano entertained a motion by McCain/Graham supporters to delay a vote on the resolution. Arellano’s claim that a voice vote was in favor of the motion was challenged. Ranting that the proxies held by pro-resolution precinct committeemen were illegitimate, the hot-tempered James Kelley insisted, “I want those proxies thrown out. The proxies, don’t count, the proxies don’t count, the proxies don’t count. They were not filled out correctly before the vote,” Kelley ranted relying on a unidentified technicality and a loud voice. The precinct committeewoman holding the proxies stated, “On my word, these proxies were given to me with instructions to vote for the resolution.”
Arellano made a “chairman’s call” and found that the proxies did count and the motion to table the matter failed.

Currently in Arizona, Independents are allowed to vote in either the Democrat and Republican primaries. The Libertarian Party’s primaries is now closed because they took the matter to court and won.
Because Independents can and do vote in whatever party primary they choose, despite his wide-spread unpopularity with grassroots Republicans, McCain has held his Senate seat with the help of Independents.

Open primaries are insanity. Or strategic if you’re an aisle-crossing compromiser.
John McCain’s hands are covered in the blood of Chris Stephens and the three other Americans killed in Benghazi while participating in a bipartisan, terrorist gunrunning operation. McCain is part of the Uniparty and is kept in office with Democrat support, and “open primaries” are their favorite tool for rigging elections.

I would vote for Palin, no not because she's a woman, but because I like her all around...she's smart, she was a good Gov. of Alaska and she is a Mom first....
What has McPain done since he lost? Fully engulfed the Democrat Party and saying he's a GOP, has gone against some of the biggest bills to savor the Democrat party, secretly helped Hillary and ‘slob boy’ to get guns into Syria, just to name a few....
He's one of the ‘good old boys’ that need to be replaced and new blood needs to be introduced into our Government, and only the people of each state can do that....Hatch is another one that so badly needs to go...every State has its ghosts to conquer, the LDS church backing Hatch in Utah; what is it with Nevada and dingy hairy? and Arizona with McPain? we need to look closely what we are sending or keep resending to run our Government...
I agree on both counts. But do they have to do this district at a time? No way to do it by state?
Agreed - Michigan has an open primary. I may just take a Dem ballot this time and vote for Bernie Sanders.
Find State Legislative people who are saying what you want to hear....and then vote them into the House of Representatives after you have firm proof that they are what they say they are...if you do, and they start drinking the koolaid from Washington D.C. then vote them out and vote someone else in....its tiring, I agree, but it's the only way to keep new blood coming in....
It is OPEN primaries that gave us Dole, McCain and Romney. It is OPEN primaries and run-offs that gave us Thad Cochran.
Close the primaries and the RINO factor will disappear!!!!
If the Republican party in each state were to close their primaries and if Congress were to change the electoral college to award votes based on who won each CD this nation would heal itself in two years.
Imagine Romney and McCain winning in Ohio, Michigan and South Carolina without cross over votes from Libs making sure Obama has an easy target.
Imagine Philadelphia, Chicago New York City, LA, San Fran, South Florida and Atlanta each reduced to 1/5 or 1/4 of their voting power in National Elections.
Stupid to have open primaries unless one wants the Dems to vote.
I agree, unfortunately the RINO wing of the Virginia GOP has decided on an open primary for 2016.
They “gave” conservatives a caucus for the three state wide offices, but insisted on an open primary to choose a presidential candidate.
Half a loaf makes no sense.
The VAGOPE is all in for Jeb or whatever designated loser the party chooses.
As long as there are political parties, then primaries NEED to be CLOSED. They are open here in my state of residence (Missouri) and it is a bad thing. My native state of Oklahoma has closed primaries and it was a much more orderly process.
If a person wants to register as “Independent”, then they shouldn’t be able to vote in primaries. Either commit, or stay OUT of the process.
One of the reasons why I consider the Republican party to be a part of the Democrat party, is this very thing.
The party makes no effort to make sure ONLY Conservatives vote to select a candidate to run from the Republican side.
Why should I take a party seriously that doesn’t care if someone shares their values or not when they become the party’s representative in an election?
This plays a huge factor in the primaries before general elections. The Democrats help chose our presidential nominee. And true to form, the Republican party couldn’t care less.
I have yet to see on focused effort supported by the Republican Party to end this. And in California when it went to open primaries, not a peep was uttered in public by the Republican party in objection.
California is an over 50 electoral vote write off every general election, because the Republican party refuses to educate the public in the state.
You can’t tell me folks in the state can’t get it, because they voted down homosexual marriage just a couple of years ago, but none the less the Republican party WILL NOT support Conservative principles here openly.
Hopefully Cruz learned from this; hopefully Palin is advising him.
JMHO, but after witnessing what the GOPe cartel did in cooperating with the RATs and the Drive-Bys in attacking her family, the Mama Grizzly decided to withdraw from seeking office and instead concentrated on endorsements.
As to why she backed McCain's re-election, I have no clue. Maybe it was badly-placed loyalty; she's only human.
