Why Ted Cruz is defending Donald Trump
The Washington Post's The Fix ^ | July 6, 2015 | Philip Bump

For the most part, the response from 2016 Republicans to Donald Trump’s comments about Mexican illegal immigrants has been uniform: tempered outrage. Rick Santorum was happy with the fact that Trump raised the issue, although not the words Trump used. (In case you didn’t hear the words — welcome back to Earth! — Trump said that "when Mexico sends its people," it sends people who are "bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.") Marco Rubio called the comments "offensive and inaccurate." Rick Perry was similarly offended. Jeb Bush deemed them "extraordinarily ugly."

But there’s a notable exception: Ted Cruz. Shortly after the issue flared up last week, Cruz said that Trump "speaks the truth" and didn’t need to apologize. He kept defending Trump over the weekend, saying Friday on Fox News that he thinks Trump is "terrific" and, on "Meet the Press," that he "salute[s] Donald Trump for focusing on the need to address illegal immigration." The suggestion that immigrants are rapists? "He has a colorful way of speaking."

So why is Cruz the outlier here? Let’s game this out....

I think Cruz has a better understanding of the American people while the others are pandering to the establishment media.

So now one can’t criticize illegals. One can’t criticize muslims. The only people one can criticize is Christians and whites.

Whatever damage has been done to Trump’s financial interests is done and dropping out would likely make the damage worse rather than better. The best way to make minimize the damage is to run a good campaign and stay in as long as he is competitive.

And Cruz’s motives are probably first that he actually agrees with Trump, and then that treating Trump with respect will leave him in a good position with Trump supporters if Trump isn’t competitive early next year, or in a good position to be considered for VP if Trump wins the primaries.

And then there are all sorts of possibilities if no one wins the primaries and Trump and Cruz have both won some delegates to take to the convention.

This might be a year when the nominee is actually chosen at the convention and not in the primaries.

If Cruz doesn’t stand up for Trump’s right to speak the truth, no one will stand up for Cruz’s right when he starts speaking out as a Republican nominee.

I’m a Walker guy, and I think that Trump/Cruz would be the perfect team.

An unbeatable team that could guide America for 16 years, and beyond.

No way Trump is going to bow out, does anyone think that someone so focused on being a winner could even CONSIDER dropping out now, and go down in history as a LOSER?

No, he burnt his ships on the shores of America, he’s now totally committed to fight to the death.

It’s going to be a beautiful fight, watch closely, we’ll never get to see something so good again in our lifetimes.

We’re living in an historical moment.

How true! I like a lot of the GOP Candidates, but the more you know about Cruz, the more you like him. He handle he press well, raised a lot of money, quick on his feet. My second favorite in Bobby Jindal.

Or could be a simple as Cruz listened to what Trump said, and agreed that ILLEGAL immigration is a serious issue, problem, etc.

As far as I'm concerned, the rest of them either don't know how to listen, or they are in favor of illegal immigration.

Trump is out for Trump, no two ways about it. However, with that said, he is not a stupid man. The destruction of America means the destruction of his wealth and he knows it. The hardest thing to do in this country today is speak the truth because you WILL be vilified for it.

You can call it “evil”, or sickness in our society, call it whatever you like; too many, way to many Americans have absolutely no idea how to stand for anything today. Not a damn clue and hence they are the easiest to manipulate because they subscribe to herd mentality and wanting to be “accepted” and with that degenerate ideas spread like wild fire among them because they are spoon fed “acceptable thoughts” at every turn.

You should see the looks I get here in Western PA when I espouse what illegals do to communities. People here are not ready for what is coming and when I tell them I can spot an illegal a mile away (especially a fresh border jumper) they call me all manners of “programmed” words; until I tell them I grew up in Southern Cali and I know first hand what it is like watching a neighborhood decline to poverty levels as multiple families inhabit multiple homes and they simply DO NOT assimilate into OUR culture; they bring their culture here and refuse to change.

Once that happens, that neighborhood is done for and you can expect theft and all manners of misdemeanor to happen as they WILL protect their own before they give two shits (by and large) about you and your family.

Lest we forget La Raza, “For the race everything, outside the race, nothing”.

Trump sees this and “gets it”; it is a threat to him and his wealth in the long run; one of many threats.

Truth is truth. Lies are lies. Many today do not know the difference. Especially those in the media.

Historical moment indeed.

Donald Trump.
A well educated, wildly successful business man who can, and will speak plainly about the problems our country faces.
He can speak truthfully because he isn’t beholden to big money because he *is* big money.
He understands business better than any candidate I have seen in my lifetime.
He can destroy any democrat on all matters of budgeting and taxation.

Ted Cruz.
A superbly educated constitutional scholar who understands the constitution better than the judges presently sitting on the SCOTUS as well as the role of the SCOTUS.
Able to break down the language of constitutional law so the average person understands completely, without being patronising.
Able to defeat the liberal press at their own game.
All that with a smile on his face.

Hillary may have a coronary from fear of facing either of them.

Now to wake up enough of America and educate them that THEIR wealth will be stolen by fedzilla so it can give that wealth to the FSA.

“Trump’s support for his honesty crosses party lines which is a good thing.”

Just because Trump said one thing that was correct does not make him honest by a long shot. He has been all over the map supporting Democrats and Democrat issues. Not only is he not honest, he has no gravitas or thoughtful temperament. He is a big time narcissist with no consistent political philosophy.

I admire Ted’s restraint is bad mouthing another candidate. That makes Ted Cruz a class act. However, Trump may be somewhat right, but he is an idiot in the way he expresses it.

“However, with that said, he is not a stupid man.”

Trump is arrogant. Arrogance goes hand and hand with stupidity. So, I respectfully disagree. Trump is a fool. Eventually though, people will grow tired of his rhetoric and settle down. Hopefully, they will settle down with someone sensible like Ted Cruz.
