The Ten Commandments monument at the Alabama Supreme Court was removed in 2002 under federal court order with the Republican governor insisting on its removal and in addition the then Chief Justice Roy Moore was removed from office by the Republicans who ran AL for refusing to get rid of it.
Moore has since regained his office by statewide election.
