Donald Trump’s outrageous comments about Mexican immigrants in his announcement speech two weeks ago should have been an occasion for conservatives to say that we have no room for bigots in our midst. Instead, a host of conservatives, from Ted Cruz to National Review’s own Rich Lowry, have defended his message, if not the crude way he expressed it:

There are a LOT of conservatives/Republicans saying this. Maybe THEY should be out there, loud and proud, criticizing the illegal immigrant flood that Obama has sponsored and facilitated.

Deliberately misconstruing Trump’s comments to include all immigrants completely distorts the meaning and import of what he said. The distorter knows it’s necessary because without it Trump’s comments are 100% accurate.

To claim that opposition to illegal immigration is founded in bigotry is a deliberate attempt to lie and mislead people. We don't want any poor, low skilled, generally criminally inclined group of people sneaking across our borders and committing crimes, or becoming parasites on our government's dole.
Much of the country felt the same way when the Irish showed up back in the 1840-1860s period. At least they found a use for some of them. The Union needed lots of cannon fodder, and they suited that task well enough.
Immigrants follow law. Foreigners who do not follow law are not immigrants, they are illegal aliens.
I’m not a fan of Trump, but I completely agree with his statement on this issue. Fred Reed, who expatriated to mexico around the turn of the century said the same thing. He said most Mexicans have no desire to live anywhere but Mexico, but their “lowlife” is who sneaks into the US.
The establishment is running scared of The Donald...and bringing out the long knives, en force.
