One of America’s weirdest congressional districts has just been trashed by the Florida Supreme Court
Washington Post ^ | 7/10/15 | Miller & Fitzpatrick

.... Florida’s infamous 5th congressional district...runs from near Jacksonville in the North, hooks east for a few miles, then west for a few miles, narrows to the width of an Interstate highway for a while, cuts west all the way over to Gainesville, then swivels back east and southeast, finally arriving at Orlando, a distance of about 140 miles, sweeping in black neighborhoods along the way in order to create a “minority-majority” district.

Not good. Majority Minority districts leads to polarization and the kinds of 1850’s politics we have now.

That’s a strange looking district. Is the city of Charlotte cut in half or totally cut out of his district? Talk about gerrymandering. Governor Elbridge Gerry would be proud!

States were required by FedGov to create districts that would guarantee black representatives and are being castigated for creating districts that guarantee black representatives.

The solution is coming to us with Federal Zoning newly sanctified by the Court whereby populations can be moved around by the All Wise Rulers in Washington to send the preferred mix of representatives to Washington without having to draw Dali-esque geographical districts.

Democrats and courts which forced the so-called “Voting Rights Act” of the early 1990s certainly — and obviously unintentionally — helped the Republican party in the deep South. Newt Gingrich quickly recognized the flaw in the liberal plan and therefore came out four-square in favor of it though his doing so raised some eyebrows at the time.

If having a few entrenched racist idiots like Corrine Brown, Shiela Jackson-Lee and others (as if the Jacksonville and Houston ghettos would ever elect anyone better, under ANY district map) is the price to pay for Republican control of the House, then so be it.

Unfortunately, Republican “control” now means liberal RINO control and has therefore become worthless, and squishes like John Boehner who enable our monkey-puppet President and his party are far worse for America than the presence of a few single-digit IQ types like Brown, Lee, et al who at least provide entertainment value.

I suspect this has something to do with reducing the republicans again to their preferred minority status in the House.

Don’t remember, but I’d think a highway named that would have plenty of her constituents surrounding it. Nobody else in their right minds would live near there.

5 is the only district that doesn’t look sensible. When the districts are redrawn to ball as near square as possible and and there is one less Negro House member the Feds will use the Court to disallow the result. So long as Florida is a “swing” state it must be kept in turmoil.

Thank you for providing that. It was hilarious. I can’t believe she is in Congress. Thankfully the comments are mostly negative. There might be some hope after all.

It was democrats who set up the original twisted districts to help themselves and to secure sure wins for blacks.

Too bad the Washington Post is such a corrupt newspaper... their dem handlers should have given them both sides of the story so they didn’t look soooooo obvious.

Look, I can speak from experience! These people, Republican and Democrat have been cutting, resizing my mostly Conservative District 7 for 15 years! Complete BS!
