I’ll keep out of the debate. I’ll just note the dude in the white sweatshirt (center, background) is super mellow.
Here’s the closeup version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqVlpKzTP0g&list=PLGI6zw-WIcEzaQSBn35czl7WroeSgAYmv&index=1
I don’t understand what the first guy is thinking. His partner is on the floor rolling around with the camera man, and he adjusts his watch, rubs his head, straightens his clothes and looks around.
This after firing his weapon is an occupied room. And he’s not even looking where he’s firing.
Two heavies walk in to the room and one tries to take your camera or other property you have in your hand. What do you do?
Yep, he’s just taking it all in.
I don’t know what I’d do if a bully tried that crap with me.
It would probably be a reflex action and I’d end up in the slammer just like Skidmore.
No argument there! In fact, it would have been so much better to leave the camera alone, and call the cops on a trespass complaint, or something like that.
Then let the courts decide on whether that photographer had the right to be there. I would hope that he did have that right.
What bothers me here is the escalation to violence. And that escalation originated with the photographer.
The PINAC dude over reacted. That being said, I can’t stand these pompous government officials and their nazi guards that I hope the jury lets the PINAC dude walk.
It’s about time the government fears the public; it’s been the other way for too long.
I relinquish my camera and start working on discovering where they live.
Couple of things here:
1. Where was the escalation of force from the guard? Why did he walk right up and put his hands all over the photog without identifying the reason for the guard being called? No officer presence displayed at all. First thing out of that gaurd’s mouth should have been, “Hello Mr. Skidmore, please step outside into the hall with me.” Something to break the ice ya know, instead, the gaurd goes straight for the soft, hands on approach.
2. Watch the woman who was arguing with Mr. Skidmore... Lights on, roaches run.
3. Lastly, watch the guy in the White shirt sitting in the chair on the wall with his left hand draped over the chair next to him. Combat vet I’d bet and the best damned witness to this whole thing. Cool as a penguin’s a$$ in an ice storm.
Well, a couple things here . . .
I have no problem with simple filming during public gub’mint meetings. However, this dude puts his hands on a council member (not good) and gets in her face - literally. If he had not done that, the other member wouldn’t have gotten up and gotten the security. In today’s world, you don’t touch anybody you don’t know and aren’t comfortable with. Act like a dork and come up and touch me, my wife or my offspring and see what you get.
Secondly, the security guard put his hand on the camera with intent to take it. The PINAC dude blew a gasket and literally went upside his head. Seeing that the guard was armed and half his age this is a bad calculation and leads me to the conclusion that our ‘hero’ has a few loose screws. IMO, this episode is not comparable to others I have seen with LEO’s just harrassing without probably cause.
Final thoughts: If you want to record something, be nice and play nice.
Good question. If I were taken by surprise, I probably would have reacted as that photographer did. And I believe I would have been wrong in doing so. As I mentioned in an earlier post, this was not a street situation where a person could reasonably be in fear of his life.
Very well said.
“I dont know what Id do if someone came charging me and without saying a peep grabbed and yanked at something that was attached to my neck.”
If I am in a county courthouse knowing that I am on film, I would act with dignity first and make my complaint in a formal manner.
First time I’ve heard of someone bringing fists to a gunfight. And he didn’t get shot.
“Ohio recognizes the right to use reasonable force in the defense of property.”
In this case it will have to be decided if at some point the photographer becomes the aggressor and the guard feared for his safety.
Notice, too, that the security guard was already familiar to him during the routine security check before entering the room - which he filmed. Secondly, whoever did the commentary makes a wide berth for his actions due to his bad experiences in the past. Well, if you’ve had problems and you might go nuclear, why keep it up? Me thinks he doth complaineth too much.
Here’s a couple of things:
He’s ACCUSED of putting his hands on her.
The guard never vocalized his intentions. He just grabbed and yanked.
Final thoughts: Skidmore was playing nice until a bully attacked him.
Yep, a clear stand your ground reaction by the guard.
I’m glad to know their are so many psychiatrists on FR.
