Ghostwrites, dubious consultants and falsified applications are being used by many of the Chinese students who apply to enroll at U.S. universities, according to a new CNN report. A 21-year-old woman from Jiangsu Province told the publication how her parents paid three consultants $4,500 to fill out the application, write her personal essay and compose teacher recommendation letters. The reason: Her level of English wasn’t strong enough. “I did feel slightly guilty but all my friends did the same thing,” the woman said.

It doesn’t stop with the application. Cheating on exams in college is widespread amoung the Chinese.

In one of my engineering classes I watched a couple of chinese cheat by sharing a calculator and padding the answers back and fourth.

I watched this on two mid-terms and before the final I went to the professor and complained. The professor had assigned seating for the final. These two guys are diogonally across the room from each other. They freaked.

I suppose they did fine on the final as they were hard workers but I am sure were un-nerved by the change.

"parents paid three consultants $4,500 to fill out the application"

There are plenty of "American" college bound students whose parents have done this.

No doubt. It's hard to feel much sympathy though isn't it?

Our students are supposed to bring translating devices, but the Chinese students seem not to understand that instruction and expect to use their cell phones with online translations instead. I freaked out a couple of my students when I banned their cell phones during tests after seeing anomalous results from their use of "translators".

Absolutely, and not only out of state tuitions but full tuitions to cover all the money lost in affirmative action. Chinese and Arab students are being exploited to service our social welfare/diversity experiments.

I live a 10 minute walk from the Emory University campus.
(Harvard is considered the “Emory of the North” :-))
You cannot believe the number if Chinese students that attend this ($$$$) private university.

My experience with Chinese grad students and alleged professionals was that they were all cheaters with no ability whatever. A science dept at my former university voted to give the Chinese students IN STATE tuition AND taxpayer funded scholarships right after the Chinese govt offered to pay the professors extra money to take their students for advisement. The professors got a small amount of cash, $1000 per year, and the taxpayers lost over $100,000 each on crappy students who made worthless so-called professionals.

The article sounds like an extension of the war on Asian students.
