No word on the race of the perp or cop...but couldn't help but think of another person who assaulted a police officer after being given a lawful order...

Police say the man died after surgery. His name was not released, but Toman says he had an extensive arrest record including “acts of violence towards law enforcement officers,” and there was an active warrant for him.

I’d like to see all the details, but my instinct is that I’d buy this cop a beer.

Me too.
It seems to me that if you punch a cop, you should reasonably expect to be dead in 3, 2, 1...

I just have to ask, does that include the rest of us as well? Let's say someone punches me. Can I just blow his head off?

In Florida...yes, as a general matter of fact, you can!

Should you?
Well that depends on the specific situation, doesn’t it?

The severely autistic young man who obviously freaked out and hit me in my throat a few years back (when his very stupid relative/guardian took him into a crowded, loud restaurant)did not intentionally set out to assault me.
I didn’t kill him, or even call the cops to press charges.

If a criminal tries to rob or physically assault me...the results would be wildly different.

Being assaulted puts one in the “reasonably in fear for their life/well being” category and many States say it’s OK to use deadly force. Cops get a quicker ride through the process but you would likely be OK if you had to kill someone under those circumstances.

Actually, I was wondering if the poster thought there was any particular reason that it mattered if it was a cop or not. It seemed so from the initial comment.

Seems like they have a much easier time with the 'process' than just a regular joe would in the same circumstance.

Don't you think cops should be treated a bit differently?

We, as a society, pay cops specifically to deal with the criminal element, instead of having assorted private groups of volunteer or paid civilian vigilantes, acting as they please, to enforce compliance with laws.

I promise, you will come to fear how incredibly violent “regular joes” will act, absent cops and laws, in similar circumstances.

Why call 911 and wait to be assaulted/injured, when you can call someone else who will deal with the threat, or just do it yourself?

Which is thinner?
The veneer of civilization, or the thin blue line of cops?

Simple answer: no. They should live by the same laws and rules the rest of us must live under.

Why call 911 and wait to be assaulted/injured, when you can call someone else who will deal with the threat, or just do it yourself?

I don't call 911. I'll call the non-emergency number to come and scrape the slimeball off my lawn.

Which is thinner?
The veneer of civilization, or the thin blue line of cops?

Given the fact that we've seen that CCW holders are actually more law-abiding than police in general, I'd say we'd do better trusting ourselves than them.

It is a matter of law in this country that cops have no duty whatsoever to protect any individual. That has been fully litigated multiple times on every level up to and including the supreme court.

I give cops no more leeway than I'd give any other average citizen. Perhaps a bit less, because I think that from an historical perspective they've not earned anything more.

So...it seems you advocate for locally developed NGO type vigilante justice systems.
Essentially regressing the entire USA to tiny powerful fiefdoms/warlords/mafia/gangland style anarchy forms of community control standards.

Basically a return to lawless barbarianism.

Is that because you believe you would achieve supremacy over your irksome neighbors in your local area?

ROTFLMAO!

“I don't call 911. I'll call the non-emergency number to come and scrape the slimeball off my lawn.”

Sure you will...because that will work out well!

I'm betting that you have not actually experienced the immediate threat of death, as a law abiding citizen, yet.

You're reading an aweful lot from my comments. Feel free to believe that.

This may very well apply to you.:

"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen."
- Samuel Adams

I'm betting that you have not actually experienced the immediate threat of death, as a law abiding citizen, yet.

You'd bet wrong.

I do believe you could be very dangerous individual.

I have no reason to “believe” you have the skills to either lead or follow, and no indication that you are even aware enough to get out of the way.

So this may apply to you :
Stay far, far away from my back.
