Atlanta NAACP chapter calls for removal of massive Confederate sculpture in public park

A sculpture in Georgia larger than a football field – depicting Civil War luminaries Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson – has become the latest target in the push to purge the South of signs of the Confederacy.

The Atlanta chapter of the NAACP called Monday for the elimination of all symbols of the Confederacy from Stone Mountain Park, whose marquee attraction is the 90-foot-high, 190-foot-wide sculpture carved deep into the mountain.

"Those guys need to go,” chapter leader Richard Rose told WSB-TV, referring to Davis, the former president of the Confederate States of America, and the two Confederate generals. “They can be sand-blasted off, or somebody could carefully remove a slab of that and auction it off to the highest bidder.

"My tax dollars should not be used to commemorate slavery,” he added.

In addition to the removal of Confederate symbols from Stone Mountain Park, located outside of Atlanta, the group says it also wants all symbols removed from state-owned buildings, parks and lands.

A spokesman for the park told WSB-TV that any removal of the monuments is up to the Georgia state legislature.

Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., who serves the district in which the mountain sits, told local radio station V-103 that he is “not so much affected by Stone Mountain Park as I am by the flag flying at an official government building like a state capitol or even the federal Capitol, a position, the seat of government.”

“I view Stone Mountain as more of a museum-type archaeological place of remembrance for those who want to remember back then and they have a right to remember back then and the park is there,” he said.

These crazies are going to fire howitzers at the mountain to remove the massive Confederate sculpture? Same way the Taliban destroyed Buddhist monuments in Afghanistan?

Really a little twist? You think this drum beat for the removal of American history is coming from patriotic Americans we truly understand her history, our values and principles of democracy?

Obama his administration, the Democratic Party and all his social set are Marxists and use all the tools in the Marxist playbook. The Marxists have been planning to take over the Democrat party for generations and were able to do it because, at their core, the Democratic Party has always been more of a criminal gang been a political party.

As for you, maybe you should go back to Slate and the Democratic Underground and get off of free Republic.

I’m curious...what do African-Americans and other minorities represent to you?

I didn't comment on NAACP, an organization which is clearly focused on race. What I was objecting to was your race-baiting comment("... subsidize Black females and their bastard children"): It isn't a skin color issue.

You seem to forget what the Confederate crap represents to African-Americans and other minorities.

Why should this matter? How much do African-Americans care about what matters to non African Americans?

Cry me a river. If one was a slave, we can talk. If ones Parent was a slave, ill listen.
The proper answer is for them to embrace freedom, hang a photo of Lincoln, etc. Wave the rebel flag if they were a confederate descendant, organize meetup groups to read Harriet Tubmans book’s, commission scultures of John Brown,,, the list is exhaustive.
But we cannot structure society to ensure that every butthurt feeling is addressed.

And as a demographic, blacks have destroyed cities, caused crime waves the likes of which were utterly unknown in the 1950s. They refuse education and are openly hostile.
Black illegitimacy is 75% nationwide and 90% in some cities.
So I don’t care what they feel.

A black man from the 50s, wearing a suit, and sandwich board with the slogan “I am a man”. Marching in silence. THAT had power. Rosa Parks refusing to go to the back of the bus? My hat is off. The people refusing to leave the Woolworths counter until they were served,,, heros.

But these brick throwing, building burning, knockout game mutts today who riot over criminals like Trayvon and Brown? No, I don’t care.

I don't think the Confederate Battle flag and the Swastika are "pretty much the same thing." I do not own or display a CSA flag, and I'm no partisan of the CSA nor of slavery, but I'd want to point out that the USA flag flew over legal slavery in the USA for 87 years; the Confederate Battle Flag for less than 4. Many CSA leaders and fighting men were intent on defending their families, farms and homes, and would not turn their rifles against their neighbors. That is an honorable position.

Descendants of the CSA deserve a respectful hearing when the say that they are commemorating "Heritage, not Hate."

That includes, of course, Black Sons of the Confederacy.

RE: Confederate flags or monuments have no business being in any publicly funded place or government building.

Can you explain why?

Wasn’t the monument created before the area became a park?

By every measure, (education, literacy, legitimacy, crime, etc,) blacks in the 1940s and 50s were better than the black population of today.

It clearly wasn’t slavery that caused the decline of blacks today. As recently as the 80s, blacks were fully in the mainstream of society and racism was boorish.
In the mid 90s and militant hateful culture emerged there, and it isn’t white Americas fault.

And my old physics teacher who was a Tuskegee Airman agrees with me. And he tolerated no foolishness or sloppy thinking.

I know what Rap and what happened in Baltimordor represents to me.

I know what ‘diversity’ (used to be affirmative action) means to me and my children. - They are behind the 8-ball in terms of advancement.

I know what the Banneker Scholarship means to me - I’ll never receive one.

You want a color blind society - that works both ways.

PS. I had ancestors that fought in the Civil War thank you very much.
