Paying by the Mile
Willamette Week ^ | July 1, 2015 | ANTHONY MACUK |

Excerpt: ... The agency [ODOT] wants to move away from fuel taxes and instead charge drivers based on the distance they drive.

ODOT officials have been conducting a decade long search for ways to do it—and it’s turned into an unfocused, meandering and expensive effort.

The latest plan: Starting July 1, the state is seeking as many as 5,000 volunteers to pay the state a mileage-based rate rather than taxes at the gas pump.

The pilot program, called OreGo, relies on drivers signing up with one of three companies that will supply plug-in devices to count the miles.

But the plan is already troubled.

ODOT is struggling to find ways to lure drivers of hybrid and other fuel-efficient cars into a program that could penalize them for using less gas. According to OreGo’s own Web-based calculator, cars that get better than 20 miles a gallon would actually pay more under OreGo.

They will never get rid of the fuel tax and the drivers will be stuck with another tax.

It is about control.

Not taxes.

Back in the day (’70’s) there was this place that was owned by the eventual mayor of Portland (Bud Clark maybe). Anyway, he owned “The Goose Hollow Inn” in the burbs. They had the best toasted Reuben sandwich I have ever had the pleasure to consume. They had a chess night and was smokeless...I loved the place and especially the sandwich.

That’s what I would be afraid of. They may say the mileage tax is a substitute for the gas tax. But the most likely outcome is that we end up with both mileage taxes and oer gallon gas taxes.

If it is that important and worth while, why don’t you just MANDATE the program for ALL PUBLIC EMPLOYEES!!

then tell us how well it works

I’m a retired hermit! My 2001 Highlander has 95,000 miles on it. I didn’t drive 5 miles last week! Supermarket is a block away, package store 3 blocks away. They’ll probably set up a minimum service charge for people like me!

Why should vehicle drivers pay road taxes that will be substantially used for non-road issues, especially green issues, bike lanes, etc?

I recently moved from Oregon after similar intrusive policies were put into place. This is just another unwanted and unnecessary ploy to monitor and control movements of the general population. I absolutely do not want to have to have my vehicle inspected yearly by anyone but a trusted mechanic. Where I go and what I do at any time is none of their friggin’ business. How about no transportation type taxes, period.

These hybrid and clean-car drivers are using less fuel, correct? Wasn’t this the objective?

Oregon for the most part is a poor state and damned few people can afford a “Green” vehicle.
