NY board backs $15 minimum wage hike for fast-food workers; Gov. Cuomo expected to OK increase

NEW YORK (AP) — Fast-food workers in New York state would see a super-sized raise under a plan to phase in a $15 minimum wage — the first time a state has singled out a particular industry for such an increase.

The hike, approved Wednesday by the state Wage Board, would increase gradually over three years in New York City and six years for the rest of the state. It would apply to employees at any fast-food restaurant with 30 or more locations, impacting an estimated 200,000 workers.

"You cannot live and support a family on $18,000 a year in the state of New York — period," Gov. Andrew Cuomo, whose administration must approve the idea, said at a Manhattan rally celebrating the proposal. "This is just the beginning. We will not stop until we reach true economic justice."

"You cannot live and support a family on $18,000 a year in the state of New York — period,"...

You're not supposed to be able to support a family while working a fast food job.

College graduates are accepting $15 to $20 an hour jobs. This will have a ripple effect.

My main question is asked in the article: why does this only apply to fast food jobs? Is that legal

Bill of Attainder much?

Ah what the hell. The rest of the Constitution is shredded. Why not that part.

Hell, let's have them increase the minimum wage by actual individual. If we are gonna blow out the BoA, let's do it all RIGHT LIKE.

“”You cannot live and support a family on $18,000 a year in the state of New York — period,”

You could if you reduced the cost of living in new york through massive tax cuts, fewer government regulations, and smaller government. But thats just me.

Of course not. This punishes all but Fast Food Workers, which makes it a Bill of Attainder issue.

But laws are so November 5, 2012.

I reduced my cost of living in New York by getting the hell out of New York.

these are kids or elderly looking for supplemental income...not folks raising a family.

Is this an attempt to shut down a food industry....per Michelle's bidding??

Fire up those factories that produce robots; lots of business coming your way in NY State.

Courtesy of Cuomo the Communist.

And as for the rest of the ‘something for nothing’ crowd, the unemployment line forms to the right...

Yes....of course, because it’s working out sooooo well in Seattle/Washington. Workers are requesting LESS hours, so they won’t make over the limit to continue to receive WELFARE benefits, businesses are charging a SURCHARGE to help pay the higher hourly rate, tips aren’t being left, due to higher prices.

Yes....double down on STUPID, NYC....you always seem to do just that.

In the People’s Republic of New York, with Comrade Cuomo at the helm, there are no laws that cannot be ignored for the ‘public good’.

Plus it will create jobs at the unemployment office.

Perhaps they should see how well it's working in Seattle:

Seattle sees fallout from $15 minimum wage, as other cities follow suit
