Seniors Are Seeking Out States Where Marijuana is Legal

Seniors Are Seeking Out States Where Marijuana is Legal

The top moving destination in 2014 was Oregon, which voted to legalize marijuana last November.

When choosing retirement locales, a few factors pop to mind: climate, amenities, proximity to grandchildren, access to quality healthcare.

Chris Cooper had something else to consider – marijuana laws.

The investment adviser from Toledo had long struggled with back pain due to a fractured vertebra and crushed disc from a fall. He hated powerful prescription drugs like Vicodin, but one thing did help ease the pain and spasms: marijuana.

So when Cooper, 57, was looking for a place to retire, he ended up in San Diego, since California allows medical marijuana. A growing number of retirees are also factoring in the legalization of pot when choosing where to spend their golden years.

“Stores are packed with every type of person you can imagine,” said Cooper who takes marijuana once or twice a week, often orally. “There are old men in wheelchairs, or women whose hair is falling out from chemotherapy. You see literally everybody.”

Cooper, who figures he spends about $150 on the drug each month, is not alone in retiring to a marijuana-friendly state.

Twenty-three states and the District of Columbia have laws legalizing medical marijuana use. A handful – Colorado, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and D.C. – allow recreational use as well.

The U.S. legal marijuana market was $2.7 billion in 2014, a figure expected to rise to $3.4 billion this year, according to ArcView Market Research.

Marinol sucks. It is a poor substitute.

There are about 80 terpenes in cannabis, many of which have been shown to help with pain, nausea, and inflamation. None of those terpenes is psychoactive, and all are legal in other plants. Myrcine occurs in mangoes, for instance, and limonene occurs in citrus fruits

Does Pfizer pay you?

You are obviously not entirely knowledgeable on this topic.

I am sorry your son is a druggie, but that shouldn’t be an influence on your opinion.

I think it and alcohol have been around and accepted for so long that there is no reasonable way to do anything about it.

I just don't think acquiring a new

"New"?! Pot's been popular for about half a century now, and almost half of Americans have used it - there's no evidence that there is any reasonable way to do anything about pot either.

my primary concern for legalized weed is that it will lead to a general legalization of all the other drugs.

The same philosophical argument supporting legalized weed works for all other drugs too.

The philosophical argument, yes - the practical arguments I cite above, no.

As I've already pointed out to you, marijuana-induced vomiting is rare, and Marinol does get one high:

"With the large prevalence of marijuana use in the world, why does it appear that so few patients develop CHS?" [emphasis added]
- Galli, J. A., Sawaya, R. A., & Friedenberg, F. K. “Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome.” Current drug abuse reviews 4.4 (2011): 241–249 (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3576702/)

According to its makers: "You should not smoke marijuana while using MARINOL Capsules. It is possible to get too much dronabinol (an overdose), especially if you use MARINOL Capsules and smoke marijuana at the same time. Signs of a mild overdose would include drowsiness, euphoria , heightened sensory awareness, altered time perception, red eyes, dry mouth and rapid heart rate (tachycardia)." In terms of culture, that's "new." But why am I not surprised you have no inkling of the larger sweep of history and society?

Long enough for almost half of Americans have used it - and for the weight of the evidence to be that there is no reasonable way to do anything about pot either.

Pot is a self solving problem. It's called "natural selection." Unfortunately innocents will have to go along for the ride into crazy.

You calling me arrogant is the richest thing I have heard in a while!

Take a look at your screen name.

You brag about your job title.

Presumably so that people will give more credence to whatever you say.

That's arrogant, sweetiecakes. Nothing but.

I apologize for my disrespectful tone.

I, like others here, have strong feelings on this issue.

Anyway, i did some more reading last night on the topic of cannabis with no THC .

Breeders are creating pot with almost zero of it, but with all the other good stuff. Do you disapprove of that also?

I don’t know who I find more repulsive, anti RKBA or anti-marijuana people. Both make the world a much worse place with no upside to their fascist existence.
