Who Gets the Winter Games No One Else Wanted?
The Wall Street Journal ^ | July 29, 2015 | MATTHEW FUTTERMAN

As choices for potential Olympic cities go, the decision that the International Olympic Committee faces on Friday for the 2022 Winter Games ranks as one of the strangest in recent memory.

Back in 2012, it looked like the race for 2022 would be extremely competitive. But after exploring bids, Oslo; Stockholm; Munich; Krakow, Poland; and St. Moritz, Switzerland; all dropped out amid public opposition and concerns over costs. Lviv, Ukraine, dropped out because of an ongoing war.

That left Beijing and Almaty, Kazakhstan, neither of which holds a reputation as a top winter sports destination compared with past cities such as Innsbruck, Austria; Lillehammer, Norway; or Vancouver, Canada that have hosted the Winter Games.

Also not ideal, with only Almaty and Beijing in the running, the IOC is guaranteed to be holding three consecutive Olympiads in Asia. The 2018 Winter Games will take place in PyeongChang, South Korea. Tokyo has the 2020 Summer Games.

Lake Placid NY never got out from under the effect of hosting the 1980 games.

Costs too much! Build a huge infrastructure for 1 time use? I don’t think so.

Cook county, Illinois. New land speed records in all events.
And because of stringent gun control laws, safe as houses.

exactly

South Korea is building something that will still be useful when its over. It’s going to be a real resort afterward apparently.

It costs a fortune and loses a lot of money in exchange for very fleeting prestige.

I think they should go to Las Vegas. That’s a fun place with lots to do.

Michigan would be a great place to hold the Winter Olympics...but where? How about Alpena, Traverse City or Marquette?

Good. It is long past time for the major Olympic countries to tell the IOC that the days of grandiosity are over. If the IOC doesn’t want to come back to earth, scrap it and start over with a new federation that is run on sensible lines.

It’s the 21st century—they really don’t have to be held in one location.

Let the events be sprinkled across the globe, where there are already adequate facilities. Opening and closing ceremonies can be had in each location, timed together, with a nice big, Internet-mixed smushing of it all into a simultaneous event.

Let 30 cities who want an event be a part of it.

I’m surprised to see someone say that. I think Lake Placid was the last of the small-town Winter Olympics in a place that still looks almost the same as it did 35 years ago when it hosted the event.

They should build two permanent sites on each continent (1 summer, 1 winter) and rotate - be done with it. Then those cities might be able to make a go of it with a longer term plan.

Let the permanent bids begin! OR Better - have the IOC ownrun the venues!

The Summer Olympics should be held in Athens where they began. Added benefit: the Greeks could use the cash.

And thats why it looks the same. It destroyed a lot of the towns ability to do a lot considering IIRC, they are STILL paying off the facilities and associated costs. They were for sure when I left the area in the mid 90s and there was no end in sight.

They were never able to host all the events after the olympics they planned for due to a combo of the weather, the Adirondack Park Agency interference, NY generally changing laws on a moments notice and a lot of other issues.
