Republicans train for debate, casting wary eye on Trump
The New York Times ^ | August 1, 2015 | PATRICK HEALY Michael Barbaro

“You only attack the king if you can kill him; otherwise you leave him alone, because the king will kill you,” said Frank Luntz, a Republican pollster. “So the candidates better have something good ready if they come after Trump. Or they might try to find a way, in their responses, to remind Trump of something that another candidate said that really bothered him.”

I think everyone underestimates Trump. Trump has cut his teeth on competing with vipers in the New York developer market. He has done it over 3 decades. Trump is a man who has a very strong sense of purpose and he studies his competition. That the other candidates are going to somehow goad him into the open so they can savage him is totally, totally naïve.

To Trump this is no more than knocking his competition out one by one the way he is used to doing when competing for a development project. The candidates have no idea what they are up against.

They've already come after him. He flicked them aside like bugs hitting the windshield of a semi.

It looks like it's shaping up to be a bunch of good ole' boys who have had an easy time of it. And maybe they're going to have to debate a street fighter who came up the hard way.

That might give someone pause for concern.

McCain called Trump supporters crazy
Rand Paul called Trump supporters insane
Linda Graham said Trump is ruining his Party

Perhaps Luntz is right

I wish that there was a way to score the moderators. Have them also put some skin in the game and be punished or rewarded for their individual actions and be graded on their ties, hair, shoes, or more importantly the quality of their questions.

Surely Ted Cruz is not worried. He was a national champion debater in college; he should be able to handle anything.

It will be interesting to see how he articulates his responses. It’s one thing
to debate for points but another to try to appeal to the political masses. JMO

They should have read his books. He’s not a debater but he is an author. 15 are listed at Amazon books. The revision of one written in 2011 comes out the day of the debate. Reading through the synopsis he has laid out the detailed plans for all those generalities he has been spewing the past month.

One brilliant man!

People do not always vote for the champion debater. They go more by whom they feel a connection to.

Good point. As a champion debater: the facts and logic should carry over. It’s just style that changes.

You have not been paying attention. Over just the last few months alone, Ted Cruz has taken on some of the toughest, most hostile interviewers in the mainstream media on any topic they cared to throw at him, without them laying as much as a glove on him. He is that good. I don’t see any of these GOP candidates getting the better of Ted Cruz in any debate no matter what format it’s in.

Great comment GilGil. On the same track I like how Trump is informed when he talks to the press. He reads conservative media for sure. Most of the others don’t seem to and it makes them really out of touch with us and IN touch with dems.

One thing, among many, that Trump has shown us is that even our best politicians pale in comparison to a successful person from private industry.

Trump is right, we have incompetent politicians.

We will know who the GOPe stalking horses in the coming debate.

I predict the ones on lowest end of the polls will attack Trump.
They will be exposed as doing the dirty work for Yeb, so Yeb can avoid
getting into the muck.

Trump is right, we have incompetent politicians.

We didn't need him to tell us that. The GOPe goes beyond incompetent. They're treasonous. Working in concert with forces that are dedicated to the collapse of America so that they can remake it as per globalist ambitions. (Cf, George Bush)
