McConnell is protecting progressive Republicans here. It wouldn’t surprise me if there was some horse trading with Reid. No way Kirk, Ayotte, etc. want an open vote on defunding PP.

I’m not saying there are no exceptions at all, but it seems a necessary and regular procedure- not weird at all.
Search it and there are numerous examples.

[ He has to face God soon, with the Lake of Fire awaiting him. ]

Mitch already sold his soul and KNOWS he is going to hell, right now he is positioning himself to get in Satan’s good side so that he gets made into a demon in hell DOING the torturing and not one receiving the torturing.

What he doesn’t realize is that in hell, everyone except Satan and his fellow fallen angels are tortured.

— In today’s vote, McConnell voted for the defunding side i.e. to stop debate. —

Voting “no” on a cloture motion means debate continues without limit. Voting “yes” on cloture means debate is limited, then vote on the issue.

I do not know what you are saying. McConnell voted FOR cloture i.e. to stop debating. That meant that the bill would be voted on immediately without the endless delay of the filibuster. Since the Pubbies had the votes to pass the bill but not to stop the filibuster, that was the correct way to vote if you want to defund.

Are you saying differently?

I’m sure Turtle will explain it’s some “procedural” vote thingy. The GOPe and its ilk love procedure. All symbolism and rules and procedures over substance.

McConnell changed his cloture vote to "NO," with the intention of preserving this cloture motion for reconsideration.

Otherwise, you have the logic at least generally correct, and maybe totally correct (hard to tell in a brief discussion), in that voting to limit debate, which is the same as voting YES on a cloture motion, advances the issue to a vote.

What amazes me is how easily the people who are tearing this nation down have it.

There is NO opposition anywhere.

After six years - there’s still NO opposition anywhere.

And people keep telling me that losing with dignity is winning.

So 46 senators support the genocide of black Americans.

Well, at least we aren’t adding any more states right now, or the Democrats would insist that for every anti-abortion state that joined the union, a pro-abortion state would have to be added.

Doesn’t the House control the purse strings in these things? Wouldn’t they be able to defund the murderers?

I have searched it, many times. Reconsideration under cloture wasn't common until maybe 6-8 years ago. Not tooting my own horn, but see this link for evidence that I followed the senate fairly closely for a few years.

It (reconsideration of a failed cloture motion) is not necessary, and it is weird. If a cloture motion fails, the subject is still alive. Just file another cloture motion, they are free. I can point to numerous examples where cloture was attempted multiple times on a single subject. See Bush judicial nominees.

Well look who these morons vote for and defend. It tells you what kind of people they themselves are.

So America goes to hell because the supposed opposition to that, accelerates it intentionally and calls it conservative.

This vote should have been 100% against anything that would continue funding, procedural or not.

When Mitch wants total compliance he gets it. And he did not get it here. Ergo he did not want it. Simple math.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonkblog/wp/2013/02/17/why-is-harry-reid-always-voting-against-his-own-plans/

“... somebody on the winning side of the cloture vote — in this case, the side voting against cloture — has to file a “motion to reconsider” if the matter is to be taken up again... any supporter of the bill or nomination in question could do the same, but traditionally it’s been the majority leader.”

That’s why! The cloture motion can be reconsidered ad infinitum but it can only be brought up by a ‘winner’ of the cloture vote.

One game McConnell plays is take a hot issue (like Planned Parenthood) and delay any action until the fever pitch is gone, and it’s out of the news.

“..but sometimes if a cloture vote is not going to pass, the Speaker votes ‘no’ which allows him to bring it around again.”

Yes, that’s right, I remember Reid doing that a few times. I don’t understand the logic of it, but you are likely correct.
