ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Anger was mounting Monday at the federal Environmental Protection Agency over the massive spill of millions of gallons of toxic sludge from a Colorado gold mine that has already fouled three major waterways and may be three times bigger than originally reported.
An 80-mile length of mustard-colored water -- laden with arsenic, lead, copper, aluminum and cadmium -- is working its way south toward New Mexico and Utah, following Wednesday's accidental release from the Gold King Mine, near Durango, when an EPA cleanup crew destabilized a dam of loose rock lodged in the mine. The crew was supposed to pump out and decontaminate the sludge, but instead released it into tiny Cement Creek. From there, it flowed into the Animas River and made its way into larger tributaries, including the San Juan and Colorado rivers.
"They are not going to get away with this," said Russell Begaye, president of the Navajo Nation, which intends to sue the EPA.

Wouldn’t put that past them. Blaming the mining company, NOT the contractors working under the auspices of EPA of course.

Since my last post to you I read another recent CNN column on the matter. NOW all of a sudden THEY (EPA) don’t know the composition of the waste water. Earlier stories stated precisely what was in the waste water, but NOW they “don’t know”.
They are obviously formulating their excuse, their bravo sierra to address this situation of their own creation.
I wonder.
I would like to hear from who ever owns the mine or from those plugged it up. They would know if it was intentional or not

Unreal. I was there, just 2 weeks ago. Any tourism business based on canoeing, fishing or camping is now as dead as the fish.

Yes it is, and the first five miles of the “Million Dollar Highway” from Ouray are the most dangerous, even in summertime. Believe it or not, I once drove that whole stretch of road from Ouray to Durango in late November, through ice and snow. I was the only fool out there for 75 miles. It was hair-raising, exhilarating and beautiful. I figure I’ve been living on borrowed time ever since. :-)

Wow. Great time of year for that to happen also. Will the Vegas fountains turn yellow.
We made it through in a Spring snowstorm at night 30 yr ago with a rental car that had a bald tire and was always wanting to swap ends. Hair raising. Bought a new tire for the thing the next day.
