Ford Throws UAW (and Trump) a Bone, Shifts Work from Mexico to Ohio

With barely a month to go in its contract talks, Ford Motor Co. has thrown a meaty bone to the United Autoworkers Union. And it may also take Ford out of the presidential debate, where it recently became a target of Republican front-runner Donald Trump.

Negotiations got off to a slightly testy start last month following news that the second-largest domestic automaker would likely move production of several key small car lines from Michigan to Mexico. Now, however, Ford says it plans to shift a heavy-duty version of its F-Series pickups from Mexico to a plant in Ohio, a move that will "secure" 1,000 union jobs.

"Our investment in Ohio Assembly Plant reinforces our commitment to building vehicles in America," said Joe Hinrichs, Ford's president of the Americas. "Working with our partners in the UAW, we found a way to make the costs competitive enough to bring production of a whole new generation of work trucks to Ohio."

Anybody who believes Ford did this because of Trump is an idiot. This decision would have been made long ago.

Yes, Trump may get / deserve credit. One thing for sure, we will all know about it. Amazing what a smidgen of leadership can do.

So when is the “president” going to make GM move plants back to the USA or is he going to wait for the next round of union negotiations?

Trump appears to be capturing the Reagan Democrat vote.
Very interesting indeed! I see today he is in my old stompin’ grounds up around Flint, Michigan.

Would be interesting to know why Ford was building in Mexico. Was it labor costs due to unions here? And what is Trump’s take on unions? They used to work building cars, now they get $40/hr for pushing buttons.

But so true, when Trump speaks, things happen.

He is not even in office yet and has already accomplished more positive economic changes than Obama has done in 7 years!

Donald Trump “Making America Great!” How you ask? By doing everything opposite of Obama.

There’s a group of UAW following Rob Portman around with signs. “No Jobs Rob Farewell Tour”
Ted Strickland (D) is challenging Portman in ‘16.

Trump bringing the issue of Ford building a plant in Met-e-co certainly
has not hurt.

Ford Throws UAW (and Trump) a Bone, Shifts Work from Mexico to Ohio

Trump will argue: "See? My efforts are already having a beneficial impact on the country. You need to make me President where I can do more. "

This move helps Trump's campaign.

I’m betting he already knew what Ford was going to do because the decision wasn’t just made yesterday or today.

I used to work for a company that printed technical manuals etc for all the automakers. We once printed technical manuals for a plant in Missouri nearly 2 years before there was a plant in Missouri.

In politics, reality is irrelevant. Perception is the only thing that matters, and Trump will have created the perception that he caused this.

Therein lies the secret to his success. He is surrounded by people who know what’s going on and he wants to protect America with the information. Unlike career politicians who want to please their donors and lobbyists.

Ford does not to be one the main topics in a Presidential Debate. Donald has stolen the Bully Pulpit from the Bamster!
