Most of Buick's future U.S. cars may come from overseas
Yahoo/Rueters ^ | 8/18/2015 | Paul Lienert and Bernie Woodall

Most Buick vehicles sold in the United States after 2016 could be imported from China and Europe, according to two sources familiar with parent General Motors Co's plans.

Only two of Buick's future U.S. models, replacements for the mid-size LaCrosse sedan and the large Enclave crossover, are expected to be built in North America, according to the sources, who did not want to be identified because their companies work with GM.

...

In Detroit, Cindy Estrada, head of the UAW's GM department, said the automaker would be "tone deaf" to import vehicles from overseas "after the sacrifices by U.S. taxpayers," as well as union concessions, to create a profitable GM after a government-funded bailout in 2009.

...

China is the largest market for the Buick brand, with sales last year of 919,582 vehicles, more than four times the 228,963 vehicles that Buick sold in the United States.

There’s a very large Buick factory in Shanghai, I’ve seen it. Most ‘upscale’ Chinese drive Buick’s. I hear they’re going to be making Caddies there too.

I’m guessing that’s why GM dropped Olds and kept Buick.

Does not matter to me. I will never ever buy another GM or Chrysler product.

That is after our family being loyal customers for decades.

“Like all Chinese imports, I would expect to pay about $8,000 for a new Buick.”

No idea if that will ever materialize, but here’s a list of the cheapest cars in the world:

The problem will always be reliability and collision standards. In poor countries, salaries are low, and this translates into relatively low labor rates for repairs.

I wish that girl would get out of the way so I can see the wheels.

Why, yes, I am getting old. Why do you ask?

No, that was Oldsmobile, which had a lot of tech-heavy or Cadillac-like features.

I’d be fine if they gave up on Buick in the US, got rid of the Cadillac lower-tier cars, and let a more American Oldsmobile take the place of both.

Buick is already in bad enough shape with being an Opel in all but name.

The Chinese are not dummies.

A tricked-out Buick (really a rebadged Australian Holden) will be sold for a price competitive with something like, say, a Toyota Avalon or equivalent.

GM’s subsidiary Holden in Australia is not doing so well either, but that in no way detracts from the quality of the cars they design and build.

This is true.

And the Chinese will NEVER get the imports into the US. Chery has been trying for years. What with the safety issues, and the unions blocking them - they ain’t got a chance.
