Democratic Party elites have abandoned public education

For years, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan’s children attended public school in Virginia. Now, he has announced that they will go to the University of Chicago Laboratory School, the private school where Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel sends his kids and where Barack Obama sent his daughters when he lived in Chicago. The tuition for the 2015-2016 school year is approximately $30,000.

Duncan’s senior advisor and former education commissioner of New York, John King, also sends his daughters to a private Montessori school near Albany; New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s daughters, on their part, attend an elite boarding school in Massachusetts.

There is nothing wrong with private school. The problem here, though, is that too many Democratic elites advocate education reforms such as the Common Core standards, charter schools, and high-stakes testing with minimal first-hand knowledge of how they affect schools or children. In sending their children to private schools, Democratic elites exempt themselves from policies that they might oppose if they saw their own children being harmed by them.

Obama’s lead

In 2008, many Democrats hoped that Barack Obama would send his children to public school as Jimmy Carter did before him. In their book “President Obama and Education Reform,” Robert Maranto and Michael Q. McShane explain why that was not likely to happen.

The key to understanding Obama’s education policy, according to Maranto and McShane, is his biography. Obama attended the prestigious Punahou School in Hawaii, an experience that prepared him for college and law school. Obama also observed from a distance a Hawaiian public school system rife with ethnic violence, low academic standards and an unresponsive bureaucracy. These experiences influenced Obama’s decision to send his daughters to Sidwell Friends, the elite Washington, D.C. institution whose alumni include the younger Albert Gore and Chelsea Clinton.

They are the worst of the worst. The most cynical bastards of all time. "Let them eat cake" to the millions of the "underclass" who they so proudly serve and defend against the racist capitalistic oppressive society. I think they hate this country, because they will destine their own vulnerable constituents to the most terrible of environments, deliberately so, knowing full well they will not make it out, remain uneducated, unskilled and therefore permanent wards of the state forever. To vote Democratic until they die, and these same Democratic politicians receive billions from the teachers unions to perpetuate the horror. If there was ever a conspiracy theory that is being proven every day, this article bears witness to it.

Yep. The people I work for seem upset that I homeschool a child. Never mind that their children and grandchildren all go to private schools.

Furthermore, public school teachers are nuts about this homeschooling. Everyone is concerned about socialization; indoctrination to me. I began asking them, “But not socialization over education?” Every last one of them hesitates at least a half a minute before answering, not over education.

I remember the late Henry “Scoop” Jackson, the senator from Washington sent his kids to the public schools and I believe in D.C. but this was the 70’s.

Public schools are for training the worker class and for appropriately stunting their intellects and for denying access to knowledge of History and Economics. The ruling class needs some real education in order to rule and prosper of the backs of the workers.

The public school monopoly is terrible, their unions are awful and there is no accountability. It is a failing system that spends more money than any other nation on Earth - and gets the least for it. I don’t remember Romney saying anything positive about the public school system, and he was in favor of vouchers and competition. I don’t know where the hypocrisy is?

The Dems are constantly behind the unions that run these failing schools and they also try to destroy the charter school movement because it is the end of their pork barrel. They want everyone in that failing public schools except their own kids - because as Obama witnessed in Hawaii, they know it sucks.

This is basic.
