Ron Sherman: Yellow cabs vs. Uber: Tale of the tax tape
nydailynews.com ^ | august 27, 2015 | ron sherman

It's easy to take yellow cabs for granted. Taxis are ubiquitous in the city, moving 500,000 New Yorkers, tourists and business travelers daily.

But what do they really contribute to the local and state coffers? With new competition like Uber and all kinds of assertions and assumptions being made about the value of these businesses, it seemed like a good time to provide New Yorkers with the facts.

In 2015, yellow-taxicab owners, drivers and passengers are estimated to contribute to the city and state:

-$18 million in sales tax through the lease of taxicabs.

-$94 million to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (through a 50-cent per fare MTA surcharge).

-$14 million in a city road tax ($1,000 per car annually).

-snip

No matter how you calculate it, Uber drivers and passengers contribute far, far less than yellow-taxicab owners, drivers and passengers.

Unlike taxis, Uber does not pay a direct MTA surcharge. Unlike taxis, Uber has no requirement to make any of its vehicles wheelchair-accessible. Unlike taxis, Uber does not pay $1,000 a car in city road tax. And Uber pays no medallion or medallionlike fees whatsoever.

Uber, on the other hand, allows passengers to spend the money they save in other taxable activities. To me it’s a wash.

There you go speaking logically again. The free market, even when hobbled with taxes, is such an inefficient mechanism to direct tax revenues into the pockets of the politically connected.

I use a taxicab to LAX, it’s $45..if the driver accepts it pre-ride. I use Uber, it’s $15, no tip.

Gee, I wonder what I’ll use..

That is all it is.

It is used by gov’t to limit competition. It is crony capitalism at is worst

You twist my words like a lib, writing out your backside in some desperate attempt to validate your personal position.

I avoid flatulence...please blow elsewhere, uber lover.

If libs all want to gravitate to cities and destroy them with their twisted logic, so be it so long as the rest of us dont suffer for it, dollar-wise or otherwise. It’s not conservative to force values on others...

“promoting limited government” is categorically different than forcing it upon local jurisdictions where is our last bastion of true democracy.

It is also not Conservative to suggest some municipalities may choose not to embrace the emotional BS that is a lawless corporation. That includes my own.

the 126 million isn’t paid by taxis; it’s paid by the passengers as part of the fares. what’s paid to Uber drivers is between the driver and the IRS.

Oddly enough, a little college town run by liberals with a whole lot of closet Conservatives trying to keep the straight and narrow.

Difficult to survive in the donkey’s den, but fun to kick things around and stir them up when it calls for it...

I wonder what Louie DePalma would say about this?

He would tell you the same thing he tells his own mother.

He would say "Ma.....Shut Up!!.

Yes, what do you have against the free market?

Uber got kicked out here.

I gather you’re a ‘free trade’ cheerleader...

G’day!

Most likely you saw LiDAR surveying sensors.
So...the Uber driver can haul passengers or survey terrain.

You still haven’t said what jurisdiction disallowed Uber. What is the city and state?
Enquiring minds demand to know :)

Uber got kicked out, not due to market forces, but due to gov’t interference.

My personal position is personal freedom. If I want to contract with another individual to transport me from point A to point B, why should the government stand between us and prevent that transaction just to line the pockets of some political cronies?

And when there’s an accident and the pittance settlement rubs you wrong, you have the personal freedom to wallow in your sorrow.

Conservatism is not about zero government and laws, but limited government. Livery services have insurance requirements and the public safety aspect is regulated by those unique municipalities. If you don’t like your own area’s services - change it, but dont force it upon others.

Before our own local regulations, taxis were a disaster and a public safety issue. We dont have cronyism and the resulting services are both safe and reasonably prices and regulated. AND the drivers are properly insures to protect other drivers and their passengers.

Fail.

We didnt want Uber and the City amazingly delivered what the public wanted.

You forget that sometimes government actually IS representative of the people...

I'm heading to NYC next week and had a look at cab fares. Think I'll use Uber...

http://www.nyc.gov/html/tlc/html/passenger/taxicab_rate.shtml

Metered Fare Information
Onscreen rate is ‘Rate #01 – Standard City Rate.’
The initial charge is $2.50.
Plus 50 cents per 1/5 mile or 50 cents per 60 seconds in
slow traffic or when the vehicle is stopped.
In moving traffic on Manhattan streets, the meter should
“click” approximately every four downtown blocks, or
one block going cross-town (East-West).
There is a 50-cent MTA State Surcharge for all trips that
end in New York City or Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester,
Rockland, Dutchess, Orange or Putnam Counties.
There is a 30-cent Improvement Surcharge.
There is a daily 50-cent surcharge from 8pm to 6am.
There is a $1 surcharge from 4pm to 8pm on weekdays, excluding holidays.
Passengers must pay all bridge and tunnel tolls.
Your receipt will show your total fare including tolls.
Please take your receipt.
The driver is not required to accept bills over $20.

Sounds like govt picking winners and losers

The local citizens simply could have chosen NOT to use uber. Why have the government involved at all in kicking out a legitimate business?

...legitimate business...

This is where all of you internally-conflicted, free-trade/free market types are totally in left field. And that's aside from your other ridiculous comment that leaves it up to the same populace that freely accepts free government phones and services rather than choosing NOT TO because it's just wrong.

I'm not going to play teacher today. The ridiculousness of your comment mandates an explanation by YOU:

Please demonstrate/explain how uber is a Legitimate business.
