Report: Netanyahu’s US Confidantes Believe Congress Won’t Overrule Iran Nuclear Deal

U.S. sources close to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have concluded that opponents of the Iran nuclear deal won’t secure enough votes in Congress to overturn it, Israeli news site nrg reported on Thursday.

According to the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act, referred to familiarly as the “Corker-Cardin Bill” (after its two drafters, Senators Bob Corker and Ben Cardin), Congress had 30 days to review any agreement signed between Iran and the P5+1 powers, and then vote on whether to approve it. That time frame was extended to 60 days when the international parties were unable to conclude a deal by the original July 1 deadline, and only reached the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on July 14.

If a majority of Congressmen in both the House of Representatives and the Senate vote against the JCPOA, President Obama could still exercise his veto power. In this event, a two-thirds majority of both houses of Congress — 67 Senators and the proportional equivalent of representatives from the House — would be required to override the veto.

The Republican party, which holds the majority in both houses of Congress, has closed ranks against the deal. But since they do not hold a two-thirds majority in either house, they need their Democrat counterparts to join them in opposing it.

A veto-proof majority would require 44 House Democrats and 13 Senate Democrats to oppose the deal.

However, while a number of prominent Democrats have signaled their opposition — including Senators Chuck Schumer and Bob Menendez, as well as reps Alcee Hastings, Juan Vargas, Eliot Engel and Brad Sherman — only 11 House Democrats and two Democratic Senators have come out in opposition. Furthermore, 29 of the 34 senators needed to keep a potential veto at bay have signaled their support for the deal, with Senator Debbie Stabenow from Michigan joining on Monday.

Because of these numbers, Netanyahu’s confidantes say that efforts must now be focused on convincing the American public to oppose the JCPOA, on which Congress is slated to vote on September 16.

Do any FReepers know which Congressman are on the fence on this vote, and thus most likely to be swayed with phone calls perhaps???

There is no reason to doubt that outcome.

Sure, a few Democrats will “vote their conscience” and not support the “agreement”, but the Democrat party whips (what a quaintly descriptive term!) will make sure that the two-thirds majority requirement to override a veto will not occur in either the House or Senate, and there may not even be enough votes to override a filibuster in the Senate, by a matter of maybe only a vote or two, but the discipline will not be relaxed if it comes down to a close vote.

Current Occupant wins. As do the Iranians.

I am coming to the opinion that if Iran drops a nuke on US or Israel in the nearest future, the only honorable thing for members of congress who voted with The Emperor and Lurch should resign, if they survived the attack, that is... But Democrats, for the most part, have no honor.

Forcing themselves to later vote with a veto-proof majority is one of the absolute dumbest things I’ve seen in a long time. Unreal.

Unless of course the objective all along was to throw away our security and give a bunch of money to Iran, and later pretend that they were powerless to stop it. Again, they were all for it before they were against it, I guess.

Love your thought process, but I fear the deal is approved except for the final vote to allow cover for certain politicians who might be vulnerable in 2016.

I would at least like to see 60 senators, so Emperor has to veto the disapproval this piece of fertilizer.

When - not “if” Iran ships a nuclear bomb to Israel - Kerry and Obola will blame the republicans. And the Jews.

For not permitting it to be built faster.

For not allowing Iran to build 2.

The Iranian islamonazis continues to threaten to nuke USA while these pathetic congress critters negotiate how much money they can grab for casting votes to enable the enemy’s attacks on American cities. Dam@ed traitors all!

There’s a running count here:

http://www.stopthebadirandeal.com/scorecard/?utm_source=email&utm_medium=jpost&utm_campaign=stbid

However, the Senate Democrats have been declaring their support in a drip, drip, fashion and are up to 30 now. Only 2 have declared opposition (Schumer and Menendez).

If a report like this is running in Israel now, I assume it’s not merely because they are “losing”, but it is all but over and Bibi’s people know certain Dems will vote against but just haven’t declared yet. They want to be seen as “deliberating thoughtfully” or something so they can’t all declare on the same day.

That depends on your perspective. If you are a member of Congress who shirks from responsibility (but I repeat myself) it's perfect. You vote for the Corker Capitulation® when no one is paying attention then grandstand by casting a now meaningless vote against the agreement when everyone is watching. Under Boehner and McConnell, the GOPe having been milking this kind of scam with cloture and rules votes for all they're worth.

At this point my guess is the 34th Senate Democrat will announce over Labor Day weekend so that when Congress returns from the August recess it will be seen as a fait accompli.

Then the battle will shift to whether or not even 5 Democrats in the Senate can be obtained to block a filibuster.

I mean 7 votes total to block a filibuster, 5 more than the 2 already.

Of the undeclared - Manchin, and Heitkamp from Red North Dakota who wants to be governor, as the only possible two.
Wyden, Cardin, Blumenthal, and Mikulski are aledgedly Jewish, but they are more beholding to Obama than Israel or US security

Netanyahu needs better confidantes. This was decided a while back when the Senate changed the rules to guarantee it. Rest is pure theatre.
