Alaska-bound, Obama makes waves by renaming Mount McKinley

WASHINGTON (AP) — Shrinking glaciers, Arctic temperatures and a mix of messy energy politics await President Barack Obama on his historic trip to Alaska. Even before he departed, Obama was making waves with a decision to rename Alaska's famed Mount McKinley despite a backlash from Ohio politicians.

Obama flies to Anchorage on Monday morning for a three-day tour of the nation's largest state, closely choreographed to call attention to the ways Obama says climate change is already damaging Alaska's stunning scenery. By showcasing thawing permafrost, melting sea ice and eroding shorelines, Obama hopes to raise the sense of urgency to deal quickly to slow climate change in the U.S. and overseas.

His excursion north of the Arctic Circle will make Obama the first sitting president to step foot in the Alaska Arctic, home to Alaska Natives who have received less attention amid Obama's recent efforts to improve conditions for Native Americans. In a major show of solidarity, Obama announced on the eve of his trip that his administration is changing the name of North America's tallest peak, Mount McKinley, to Denali, its traditional Athabascan name.

Obama's move to strip the mountain of its name honoring former President William McKinley, a son of Ohio, drew loud condemnations from Ohio lawmakers, including House Speaker John Boehner, who said he was "deeply disappointed" in the decision.

Of course, McKinley was a Republican, and so Obama’s real motivation is obvious.

I’ve spent many years on rock and ice, been invited to do Denali a couple of times; needed to earn a living.

I have NOT heard it called McKinley since forever!

I guess FUBO loves GM vehicles. No way he knew anything about the name of this mountain or even where it was amoungst the 57 states till someone told him how he could stick another finger into the eye of white America.

It would be funny if the name were changed back the first week after the teleprompter leaves office.

I hope President Cruz does it in his inaugural address.

Obama is not really the one to do this...blame it on Murkowski and Sullivan..of the GOP...they filed the legislation.

How then do we distinguish between the vast national park, Denali, and its tallest mountain, Denali? Is Denali in Denali? Do we travel through the thousands of square miles of Denali to see the great mountain Denali?

Change the park's name back to Mt. McKinley National Park, as it was known before the Jimmy Carter presidency.

“It would be funny if the name were changed back the first week after the teleprompter leaves office.”

Mt Reagan has a nice ring to it.

Yup, every Alaskan I’ve known and talked about it with (quite a few, actually, and all Conservatives) call it Denali. Going back to when Reagan was in office.

This name change is noise, it’s a destraction from much more important issues. It’s bait for Conservatives to go after Obama on an obscure issue few care about and those that do have the numbers and history on their side.

However, if you really want to mess with Liberals, point out that the mountain now bears the name of some of the most gas-guzzling, non-green mass produced vehicles out there: GMC’s Yukon Denali line of SUVs.
