Also- if the Russians control Syria, the Saudi natural gas pipeline doesn’t get built and Gazprom retains it’s dominating position on the European energy market.
Obama isn’t going to like Russians providing Syria with weapons to fight ISIS.
That could upset his timetable for the New Caliphate.
Syria conflict involvement may have become our business partially because Syria took in huge amounts of Iraq ‘ s WMD munitions in the lead up to war in 2003.
Nancy Pelosi said the same after her visit with Assad.
I hope ISIS is concerned.
When we see stability in Syria, our troubles might become much worse. Even nuclear exchanges become more likely, and our foes are more well equipped for launching than most people realize. Iran, for one, has conducted space launches while coordinating on engineering and tests with North Korea.

I am astounded to be backing Russia and hoping Putin is at least half the man he needs to be to stabilize the region

Nope, but I could have traveled safely in Iraq when he was running things. I wouldn’t dare visit an ISIS area. And don’t forget, WE created, funded, and armed isis. We did it through Benghazi via Turkey.
In the last several years we have systematically replaced every bad regime there with a nightmarish one that owes fealty to the Saudis.
For our part we tried to replace a very brutal dictator and in the meantime ended up with ISIS and a bunch of splintered rebel factions. Libya is working out great, too. Gadaffi was a nut, but he had been largely tamed. Now what do we have. No unified government and a terrorist group destabilizing the border(s) of Egypt. Don't even get me started with Yemen. That whole region is messed up thanks to community organizing.
