Kim again? North Korea leader backs surfing to revive ailing tourism industry

NORTH KOREA leader Kim Jong-un is forever looking for ways to expand his country's rather narrow cultural agenda.

By Harry Kemble / Published 12th September 2015

His latest brainwave is to turn his backward state into a surfing haven.

Tourism fell by 40% last year in North Korea – and it is hoped the water sport will help boost figures.

Despot Kim has reportedly given permission for a surfing camp to be held on the east coast – and a group of 20 surfers are on their way.

Nicola Zanella – an Italian surfer and Chinese national surfing team coach – and Andrea Lee – chief executive of US travel company Uri Tours – are said to be leading the group.

Nicola said he believes the communist country has a lot of surfing potential.

He said: "It looks like there are wild forests that lead to pink or yellow sand bays.

WoW! 20 surfers huh?

That ought to be enough to overcome his financial woes.

When I lived in Hong Kong you could take guided tours into North Korea - as long as you were Chinese looking

Are you talking about the 1950s? The 1990s? Last year? Unfortunately, I don't know when you lived in Hong Kong, so your statement is difficult to evaluate.

Regards,

Tourism declined by 40%? I’m surprised they have a TOURISM industry.

They have some Chinese coming in for novelty tour. I heard some of them have warm and fuzzy feeling about themselves light years ahead of NK. It makes them feel like bragging and looking down upon "stupid" N. Koreans. Then there are some ethnic Koreans from other countries such as U.S., Canada and Europe. Some have family connections. Others are pro-North Korean agents or agents of influence, parroting NK propaganda in their home countries. NK cultivated overseas network in ethnic Korean communities all over the world. There are some in U.S., too. Last I hear, they are on FBI's watch list.

Then there are out-and-out novelty seeking expat drifters, and those whose curiosity beat their better judgement.

Would be a tough choice of where to go to surf. Southern California, Hawaii, Australia; or North Korea. Hmmmm...
