Republican presidential hopeful Ben Carson jabbed Tuesday at front-runner Donald Trump's proposal to deport everyone who is in the country illegally, calling the plan impractical.
"People who say that have no idea what that would entail" legally and otherwise, Carson said, adding: "Where you going to send them?"
The retired neurosurgeon spoke before The Commonwealth Club of California on Tuesday in a 75-minute event in which he took questions from the audience on topics ranging from abortion to immigration, taxation to race relations.
Carson's longshot candidacy is buoyed by humor and a self-deprecating demeanor that some would-be voters say they find refreshing. Trump, the brash front-runner in the GOP nomination fight, has made immigration a centerpiece of his candidacy. Trump says he would deport those living in the country illegally estimated at 11 million people.

I don’t want to hear that deporting illegals is impractical or cannot or should not be done. It has to be done, anyone that wants my vote needs to understand that.
I’ve noticed that when the issue is “reform” (amnesty) the illegal alien dilettantes all recite that figure: “11 million”.
No big thang, really dawg.
But if the question is deporting them, well it’s probably a lot more ...
And now the Obamanites and their RINO allies want to add desperate ROPers to the Mexican narco-terrorist mix.
The Saudis won’t take their Brothers, but our good Wahhabi friends—17 of the 9-11 hijackers—are willing to build them mosques here.
Our government is at war with us. Go Trump.
It's amazing just...
1. how widely held is our NO AMNESTY belief, and...
2. how strongly held is our NO AMNESTY belief.
We are unambiguously passionate about NOT allowing amnesty for illegal aliens, and that will not be changing (in fact, I would wager that it's a wide majority within not only the GOP grass roots, but also the indies).
How can we all know that we so strongly oppose amnesty, and they not get it?
.
“3. guest workers and their families receive no government benefits”
You may want to reconsider this one. Families should STAY HOME. “Guests” don’t settle-in, they leave. Should be the same for guest-workers. Let them come here, ALONE, and then leave after a few years. Then, maybe, come back a year or two later to work again...maybe.
Send them home, and let them apply to come here legally as seasonal or guest workers, with the same restrictions as apply to anyone not a US citizen who applies to work in the US.
I agree, but am not sure how you can prevent the guest worker from coming legally and his family from visiting or coming illegally?
How many times is Carson going to jump the shark before getting his feet wet .?
” ‘ey, wetbacks. Where you guys been, homies?
I’m all for having guests.... when you can send them home after they’ve over stayed their welcome
You would think Carson would look around and realize amnesty is not on the menu this season.
"How to DIMINISH your electability step by step."
..... So why in the world would we need another Guest Worker Program Mr. Carson? Wouldn't that be a little redundant?
For illegals, detain and deport. Nothing less will be acceptable to the US citizen.
Great idea, Dr. Carson. Award the line jumpers with resident status. That will stop the flow of illegal aliens across the border.
“You’re Fired!”
Dunno ‘bout that.
If they have been deported once already and came back, deport ‘em to Somalia.
“I agree, but am not sure how you can prevent the guest worker from coming legally and his family from visiting or coming illegally?”
Easy, the guest worker is on a temporary work permit - the family has to come on a visitor visa. If the family overstays, then the worker is out of a job and all are deported. If the family is caught trying to sneak in, the guest worker goes home (permanently). If the family is later found to have entered illegally, again the guest worker is out of a job and all are deported.
If a female comes to visit, the max visa length is one month, and if she is visibly pregnant, she is denied entry.
The only part that I don’t have an end-to-end plan for is the case of female guest workers having anchor babies. It’s hard to see how to stop the courts from legalizing those kids...but still the mom will have to go home, based on her visa requirements.
Most of these overstay their visas so we’re letting them in on their word that they’ll go back. Liars!
Sorry, Dr. Carsen. Practicality is not the issue.
Fundamental law and principle is the issue and you do what is right.
Where would we send them? Back to whatever country they came from.
As a people we have done many , many things over the last 250 years that most would have felt was “impractical.”
Like fighting the mightiest power on earth in our revolution.
Like having a million people die in a protracted civil war.
Like going up against the Kaiser...or going up against Hitler and Tojo at the same time.
Like facing down the Soviet Union.
Like going to the moon.
And yet we persevered and accomplished those things and many, many more...and became a better people for it.
Pathways to citizenship or legal status for those who have broken our laws to come here illegally is a non-sequitur when it comes to abiding by the law and fundamental principle...it a violation of fundamental principle.
I cannot vote for anyone who would support such a thing.
