Now Is No Time to Be Voting for President Based on Emotion
NRO ^ | September 15, 2015 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 09/15/2015 3:43:16 AM PDT by nikos1121

In a country with more than 300 million people, it is remarkable how obsessed the media have become with just one — Donald Trump. What is even more remarkable is that, after six years of repeated disasters, both domestically and internationally, under a glib egomaniac in the White House, so many potential voters are turning to another glib egomaniac to be his successor.

No doubt much of the stampede of Republican voters toward Mr. Trump is based on their disgust with the Republican establishment. The fact that the next two biggest vote-getters in the polls are also complete outsiders — Dr. Ben Carson and Ms. Carly Fiorina — reinforces the idea that this is a protest. It is easy to understand why there would be pent-up resentments among Republican voters. But are elections held for the purpose of venting emotions? No national leader ever aroused more fervent emotions than Adolf Hitler did in the 1930s. Watch some old newsreels of German crowds delirious with joy at the sight of him. The only things at all comparable in more recent times were the ecstatic crowds that greeted Barack Obama when he burst upon the political scene in 2008. Elections, however, have far more lasting, and far more serious — or even grim — consequences than emotional venting. The actual track record of crowd-pleasers, whether Juan Peron in Argentina, Obama in America, or Hitler in Germany, is very sobering, if not painfully depressing.

Sowell is correct early and often for conservatives. This has not changed. I understand why Trump is hitting such a nerve with the silent majority. He has earned it. But do you really think Trump is the right guy to carry the weight to get our country back to a strong and supported constitution? It is not just our country, but our culture that is on the brink. We need a conservative to rise to the top.

I'll just add that NO votes can be counted until ALL military votes are counted! And everyone has to show full facial picture ID, No exceptions.

Absolutely! Both should have been a requirement years ago but the RATS wouldn't go for it then and they won't in the future, I suspect a few in the GOPe will either.

I think all of us who are sympathetic to Trump are well aware of the flaws and recent changes. But he is who he is, a successful fellow, who shares a view that the USA has been taken down by folks who are more interested in their own political well-being that the country.

Besides those creepy Stepford children singing for Obama change in 2008 were so beyond the pale that they defy comparison.

Trump is causing the masks to fall off.

More like causing the blinders to go on.

I like a lot of what Trump has to say, and as far as I'm concerned even at his worst I'd rather see him than the likes of Jeb or Rubio, but that doesn't blind me to the fact that he's a deeply flawed candidate in spite of having some very good (current) messages.

I can only say, "Ditto."

I read the article and agree with him except for the part about the governors. The only governor running that has done serious reform in their own state is Walker. Jebtho's family set us up for Obama and worse pushed for legislation making Obama's rein of tyranny much easier. Ego and unproven even to the point of being all over the board is why I don't trust Trump. He had an excellent chance to show the nation his abilities to lead in government {not the same as business as they are different concepts and purposes} by running for mayor of NYC.

I would just about bet his administration in that respect would not be much different in outcome than Bloomberg which if you search the only negative Trump mentions about him in a negative manner was Bloombergs media corp underestimating his wealth {seriously Donald?? The man nearly ran a Communist government} Trump has also been quoted as saying DeBlasio will be a good mayor? Where would he be a good mayor? In an authoritarian dictatorship perhaps?

Trump has a lot of baggage people are refusing to even consider. Personally I think he's being backed in a Brer Rabbit type of situation by the Liberal media and perhaps even the DEMs themselves as they can only find an Old Hag and a die hard communist to run on their ticket. Perhaps they know Trump will suit their agenda enough to save their money this time around? That's how Corker ran unopposed by the DEMs for U.S. Senate last time except for a Dem by default who got on the ticket.

People also use the Reagan was a DEM argument. Several points. Reagan was not Mr Ego, Reagan was a GOP governor before running for POTUS. Reagan actually put forth PLANS instead of Nana Nana boo boo your face looks like dodo type of antics in debating others. Has he answered the obvious What, Where, Who, When, and How, questions we need to know or has it been entertaining evasive soundbites that focus the discussion elsewhere?

Last point. The using of Hitler and others names isn't calling Trump Hitler etc. Rather he is historically describing the end horrid results of making an election a popularity contest or a charisma focused race in which the ones names he mentioned were used to make a good and valid point.

IF the Liberal Media and DEM's fear & hate Trump so much why are they feeding the hype? Four years ago not many outside of business and fiance observers knew much about or even paid attention to Trump. Who made him Rock Star famous all of the sudden meaning the past few years? Does even the GOP-E seriously fear him or are we merely being played by them all to keep us on the establishment Bi-Partisan plantation? We should never forget the fact the DEM's don't mind electing a Republican who will do their dirty work for them.

It's early yet. Fall isn't even here. The election is still over a year away and a lot can happen politically between now and first primaries and especially the major ones. IF the media Busted Trump tomorrow or Trump changes his mind ala Fred Thompson {another everyone was so certain was gonna save us all} where would the GOP especially Conservatives be then?

“Sowell never said Trump was de facto Hitler...like I said, you have a reading comprehension problem...my advice, go back to school.”

LOL....So “Hitler” is merely a literary device now to communicate the non-Hitlerian points that he wanted to make.

You are so FOS your eyes are brown. You do not bring up “Hitler” unless you are making a direct comparison to something so disgusting and anathema to civilization.

You nuance like a GOP Senator before a 3-day weekend.

Trump is NOT Hitler, no matter what Sowell says, and no matter what you say Sowell isn’t saying.

Trumps supporters cannot be compared to Hitlers supporters no matter what Sowell says, and no matter what you say Sowell says.

So professor, what is our next lesson? Ethnic Cleansing as a literary device for explaining how many Jews you can fit in a cattle car?

Actually, this is an excellent piece from one of the foremost conservative thinkers of our age.

If you’re going to seriously suggest on this site that Thomas Sowell isn’t conservative enough, then none of us can help you.

“The using of Hitler and others names isn’t calling Trump Hitler etc.”

Yes it is. It’s the ONLY reason you use “Hitler”

I can’t believe how many people think like you on this thread and pretend that this isn’t the most ridiculously offensive political comparison one can make.

You should take that back.

“Actually, this is an excellent piece”

Actually, no it isn’t. There is no way to insert “Hitler” in a political analysis piece and be “excellent”.

You Nouveau Nazi types really can’t stand that Trump is running. Sowell is simply wrong to compare Trump to Hitler. You should admit that instead of defending it.

You people are gleeful that you can say “Trump” and “Hitler” in the same sentence and pretend you are being historically accurate.

There were more dictators than Hitler and he mentioned them now did he not? Persons put in power by people believing the speaker rather than confirming and vetting credentials.

I refuse to take it back. You are using Political Correctness in the fact YOU are trying to make even the use of his name as an evil. Nice Try I don't play that game and I don't back down when it is used to try and silence me. I will not bow. Read the article. Read the first two paragraphs five times and maybe you will get this point finally and it is a valid one and a valid concern.

He in fact is not calling Trump Hitler. He is pointing out the fact that the Germans and Europe followed him blindly because he sounded good. Good grief man I have trouble reading but even I can understand that context of his article. Popularity and charisma over substance has in fact created many a dictatorship and poor leader and right now thanks to Obama our nation is very vulnerable to that as well. Meaning this so there is no misunderstanding. Who you think Trump is politically and who he actually is politically may be entirely different and it takes a lot of time and scrutiny to discern it. But his own undisciplined mouth right now is his own worse enemy.

You’re very thin skinned and incoherent...like Trump...you two are made for each other. In fact, you are very much like the voters who put Hitler, Peron and Obama into power...Trump makes a couple promises and you’re ready to give up a kidney for the guy. Hey, I have this bridge in New York I want to sell...interested?

“Four years ago not many outside of business and fiance observers knew much about or even paid attention to Trump.”

Do you watch TV? Trump has had a hit TV show on for 12 years. He has been in and out of media attention for over 35 years. His name recognition is very high.

People inside the beltway and outside can’t seem to understand the anger and frustration on the voters, myself included.

Trump has tapped into that and identified some issues that are Hot Button and are ignored by the “Establishment” who don’t seem to care.

One of the problems I see with Politics, after watching it for many years, the gradual direction it has taken to one dominated by the Professional Political Consultant going hand in hand with the Professional Politician. Both have evolved into making politics a year around big business.

The Professional Politician has no experience in any real life situation or private enterprise operation. Yet they pontificate and make laws with terrible consequences for people and business that contribute to rather than solving any problems.

So we have Trump, and to a lesser extent Carson, who represent the non-politician’s and they are what people want to see and hear.

Both Political Parties are outlived any usefulness they have and are totally corrupt to the core. It’s time to bring them both down and found new parties along the lines of what people really want. The two party system that served us well for so long is now a dinosaur and needs to change.

Really? I pity you. You think objecting to “Hitler” is politically correct?

You should back down, and you would back down if you had any idea of what you were saying.

Do you even know who Hitler was?

Let's put it this way. My TV viewing isn't Tabloid TV. I don't care who he fires etc. Up till he has decided to put himself in an interest of national security his personal life I did not follow. I know he endorsed Romney last election in the primaries of all things that right there is a huge red flag IMO.

People inside the beltway and outside can’t seem to understand the anger and frustration on the voters, myself included. Trump has tapped into that and identified some issues that are Hot Button and are ignored by the “Establishment” who don’t seem to care.

Exactly the point the author of the article made. Those type of situations open the door wide open for opportunist to walk in and using that anger and frustration to manipulate even a nation. That was Sowell's point that went over everyone's head it seems. It deserves the caution and discernment that history dictates it needs.

One of the problems I see with Politics, after watching it for many years, the gradual direction it has taken to one dominated by the Professional Political Consultant going hand in hand with the Professional Politician. Both have evolved into making politics a year around big business.

Yeap that's true especially as far as Rove is concerned. BTW who is he backing this time? Has he said? No one yet? Hum???? What's going on?

Both Political Parties are outlived any usefulness they have and are totally corrupt to the core. It’s time to bring them both down and found new parties along the lines of what people really want. The two party system that served us well for so long is now a dinosaur and needs to change.

Hey I agree 1000%. Try mentioning forming a Third Party in here and you'll quickly see how many GOP local officers etc show up to say "we must work within the two parties". I'm all for a third party and that support goes back further than my 1999 sign on here.
