Ahmed Mohamed, 14, Builds Clock, Is Cuffed for Bomb Hoax, and Ends Up Invited to White House
NY Times ^ | SEPT. 16, 2015 | PETER BAKER and CHRISTINE HAUSER

A high school student in Texas whose hobby is inventing thought he had a great idea for a project: to build his own clock.

The effort landed him in handcuffs and juvenile detention on Monday, accused of making a hoax bomb.

The detention of Ahmed Mohamed, 14, a student at MacArthur High School in Irving, Tex., near Dallas, generated a national furor even after the police said on Wednesday that he would not be charged as questions arose about whether he was targeted because of his religion.

The episode even came to the attention of the nation’s top leaders, who deplored the treatment of the young man. “Cool clock, Ahmed,” President Obama said on Twitter. “Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It’s what makes America great.”

Mr. Obama’s staff went on to invite Ahmed to come to the White House for Astronomy Night, to be held Oct. 19, an event bringing together scientists, engineers, astronauts, teachers and students to spend an evening stargazing from the South Lawn. The president’s spokesman held out the encounter as a case study in unreasoned prejudice in an era when the country is fighting Islamic terrorism at home and in the Middle East. Shortly before a news conference Wednesday outside his home in Irving, Ahmed — still wearing the NASA shirt he wore when he was detained — waved to a thick crowd of reporters from the doorway as his family brought out pizzas and drinks for the media. Ahmed said he was considering transferring out of MacArthur High and had indeed accepted President Obama’s invitation

He wasn’t “targeted because of his religion,” he was targeted because a young male with the name “Achmed Mohamed” shouldn’t be showing up in school with something that looks even a little bit like a bomb!

He’s allegedly a science nerd, but I think either (A) he hasn’t got the brains God gave a turnip, or (B) somebody put him up to this as a publicity stunt.

If the latter, two suspects come to mind (1) his dad, Mohamed Mohamed (no, I’m not making this sh!t up), or (2) CAIR, the muslim equivalent of Jesse Jackson.

Bull crap. Did you hear of Columbine and other school attacks. We don’t need lax security in schools.

The kid was trying to unsettle folks...
Why the hell else would he put it inside a briefcase or suitcase or whatever it was...
As far as being detained without parents knowing, that is how it works. Ashamed to say, put my daughter got into a fight at her middle school last year. No injuries caused, but the cop wanted to make an example. So she was arrested. I was not informed until after he left the school with her and they were on the way to the detention center. The sheriff department says that they do not want angry parents at the school confronting officers. Worried that situation could get out of hand. I do not like it, but I can admit that it is probably smart policy. BTW, my daughter was released to me and has been a little angel for the last two years!

This makes a lot more sense why he was arrested.

All the stories seem to say the police were accusing him of making a bomb. They were accusing him of making a bomb HOAX.

On Wednesday, the Irving police chief, Larry Boyd, said the police were justified in detaining the teenager based on the information they had at the time, when initially it was “not immediately evident that it was the experiment.”

Idiot police chief gave Obama a gift.

So the teachers and the police are too stupid to recognize it for what it was. You honestly think they would have reacted the same for a white kid?

The NYT is lying. Surprise, surprise.

He did not “build a clock” as the NYT says. He put an alarm clock in a briefcase sized box.

I swear to God, from the comments on the threads about this kid’s electronics project, the average IQ of Freepers must be sub-85.

Those of you casting blame at this kid should all be ashamed of yourselves! You make yourselves, and FR, look like a bunch of idiots.

I guess the America where student initiative and intellectual curiosity are rewarded is long dead, including here at FR.

“Why the hell else would he put it inside a briefcase or suitcase or whatever it was...”

I had to go look at my case. I’m pretty sure that `clock’ housing is a promotional Thompson Cigar Co, cigar case. It is identical to mine inside and out.
Probably belonged to the old man and he doesn’t want to `fess up to cigars. And “pencil case” as they are describing it sounds a lot better than cigar case.
With Obama and his fellow muslims, you can believe nothing you read or hear.

I would say choice (b) is almost certainly right. Wonder if the White House invite was in the mail before the incident itself made the press?

Sorry, any kid would have been detained and questioned and scolded for making what has the appearance of a bomb.
Most science projects are brought in on a piece of plywood or cardboard. This kid chooses to put his “clock” in a briefcase??
The kid was attempting to unsettle folks. Period. His father is an activist muslim.
If a redneck kid came to school with a clock that had been made to look like a rifle, he would have been treated exactly the same by the school. The only difference was that he would not being getting invites to Facebook headquarters or the White House.
