This is the ad that could sink Carly Fiorina’s campaign

Carly Fiorina is the new "it" candidate in the Republican presidential field, following a second straight sterling debate performance at the Ronald Reagan presidential library Wednesday night.

But there was a moment in the debate that previewed a major potential weakness for Fiorina. It came when moderator Jake Tapper noted that Donald Trump had said Fiorina "ran HP into the ground" during her time as CEO. Fiorina responded, "I led Hewlett Packard through a very difficult time, the worst technology recession in 25 years," adding: "We had to make tough choices, and in doing so, we saved 80,000 jobs, went on to grow to 160,000 jobs."

Trump -- and Tapper -- largely let the issue drop. But Fiorina's past political history suggests that her struggles at HP could be a campaign killer.

In 2010, Fiorina was running surprisingly close to California Sen. Barbara Boxer (D), who was struggling in a strong election cycle for Republicans nationally. Then, Boxer ran this ad focused on Fiorina's time at the helm of HP.

The commercial notes that Fiorina laid off 30,000 workers at HP while feathering her own nest (the ad's narrator says she tripled her salary) and buying a "million-dollar yacht" and "five corporate jets." It went up on TV in the middle of September and effectively ended Fiorina's chances.

Look at this chart, via Real Clear Politics, documenting the polling averages for the entirety of the Boxer-Fiorina contest.

See how the red line starts dropping precipitously right around mid-September? That's not a coincidence. The ad functioned as a sort of knock-out punch for Boxer even in a year where Republicans claimed victories all across the country.

They brought her in as a last resort to try and save HP. The toughest thing she did is what needs to be done with the FedGov. She fired the deadwood. This did balance the books (almost). None of the men had the courage to do the tough solution.

The Compaq acquisition was a calculated move. Few people know it also covered all DEC VAX which at the time was still in use by banks and govts. (I still have some working 4000SLC-96 in operation at work today) It didn’t pan out because the WinTel machine use grew too fast.

Since when did Barbara Boxer, the most left-wing wealthy Marin housewife in the world, become a reliable source for the GOP?

I guess Fiorina’s a good target because she’s a normal human being who actually began as a secretary - she’s not a billionaire born into wealth and who then made most of the rest of his wealth through a gambling empire.

Do you find anything untoward about using leftist bs? Have you ever run a company where you have to layoff good people so that the ship does not sink? Well I have on a much, much smaller scale and I tell you there is no joy in laying off employees but there is some joy in providing people a good paycheck for good work.

I’ll tell you what. Fiorina talks as tough or tougher than everyone’s hero, Trump, AND she knows what she’s talking about to boot.

Trump’s answer to our foreign policy issues: I can get along with all of them; they’ll all be my (our) friends. I’ll talk to ‘em....yada yada yada.

Fiorina took him to the cleaners in the last debate. Only those with Trump blinders on missed it.

Here’s what I need to know about Carly. If she were to get the nomination, it would be with the donor class, no other way. If she then went for President, she would be in even deeper, way deeper. This donor class has bought their own little government, all for them.

That puts the people back where we are, open border, exporting jobs, minimum wages, the list goes on. It would finish us off.

Doesn’t matter who made the ad.

It worked, and no one is going to listen to tortured attempts to be nuanced or to understand “context”. She was fired for not getting the job done, and HP is still having to clean up the mess. That is the story, like it or not.

If you think tech workers or people barely employed will give you 2 minutes to cover for her, then you are nuts.

Given her interest in cheerleading for guest worker interests, she’s not interested in removing “deadwood”. She was willing to “forget the engineers” that delivered value to the company - in exchange for pliant guest workers.

Thankfully Hurd came in to mitigate Carly’s damage.
