AUSTIN - A University of Texas at El Paso professor has hung a "no-guns" sign outside of his classroom, saying he opposes the recently-signed campus carry law and hopes it never goes into effect.

"The minute that the governor signed that legislation, I put up my sign outside the door," David Smith-Soto, a senior lecturer of multimedia journalism at UTEP, told the Chronicle of Higher Education. "Guns belong wherever they belong, but they don't belong in my classroom — or anybody's classroom, for that matter."

I'm not familiar with the law in Texas, but if it is legal to carry on campus, he doesn't have the authority to ban firearms from a particular room (that he only teaches at at a particular time).

I wonder how he intends to enforce this. Install a metal detector at the doorway? Pat down his students? Inspect student's personal property, purses, briefcases, etc., as they enter? Have students leave all personal property outside the classroom and attend class naked?

If you're taking "Multimedia Journalism" classes, you're going to have bigger problems.

Professors make much more than $30K. Depending on their rank they may go as high as $250K...and that is for teaching a couple classes several months a year usually with teaching assistants and research assistants). Those with tenure get a year off with 1/2 pay every seventh year. It is a rough life, no?

Yeah...it costs the taxpayers of Texas a whole lot more than $30K to have somebody this stupid teaching their sons and daughters. To have this level of stupidity teaching a college class costs much, much more than that.
