House Speaker John Boehner told lawmakers Friday that he plans to resign at the end of October, in a stunning development that comes amid mounting friction with the conservative wing of the party.
He plans to step down as speaker, and resign from Congress.
The 13-term Ohio Republican shocked his GOP caucus early Friday morning when he informed them of his decision in a closed-door session. One lawmaker told Fox News he was "stunned," and that there was "some anger" in the room "against the people who caused this to happen."
The announcement came one day after the high point of Boehner's congressional career, a historic speech by Pope Francis to Congress at Boehner's request. To the backdrop of that day's pageantry, though, Boehner was facing an internal battle in the House GOP caucus over Planned Parenthood funding and threats by some in the conservative wing to challenge his speakership.
Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., said Boehner "just does not want to become the issue. Some people have tried to make him the issue both in Congress and outside."

D.C. is one giant vacuum.
What can he do for the left that Bhoner has not? Bhoner gave 100% of what Obama wanted to Obama.
One less Liberal is always a plus.
Boner has to stay long enough to fund Planned Parenthood. It seem a lot of people are ready to express their anger at political correctness and wimpy capitulation. May we please see more true conservative Americans stand up! Begone now crybaby!
“It is clear that there are actually two different parties in Congress, both of whom call themselves Republicans.”
Yes, and the “angry” contingent knows they will be next. Time to clean up the corruption and betrayal. There should be investigations; but, it will not happen. Too many of them have been bought off and compromised.
I won’t even start on the corruption on the Democrat side of this story. All of them have surrendered the Legislative branch of Government to the executive branch or worse.
“One lawmaker told Fox News he was “stunned,” and that there was “some anger” in the room “against the people who caused this to happen.”
If these boneheads would watch just one Trump rally they would have a clue. They are on a different planet.
I knew that! :)
She would do well in the position!
i was disgusted to see him crying yet again yesterday.
he’s like a woman that has no control over her emotions. it’s sickening really... to see a man in power have that little self-control. makes me wonder what other aspects of his life he has no control over.
And Mitchie is next, the b@stard.
I wish Speaker Boehner the best in private life. Whatever his demons are, I hope he finds healing. This was by far the best decision he could have made for himself and for his party.
I think he’s more like a man who has no control over his emotions, but whatever.
We need that more than anything now.
^ 100% this!
i've never understood why the GOPe continually elects to leadership positions men who are effeminate looking or who talk like the have marbles in their mouths or who are not photogenic. these things are subconsciously negative cues and undermine the messages they give on the TV sunday morning talk show circuit.
Very well said.
but that’s not a normal masculine trait. it’s a feminine trait. lots and lots of women get overwhelmed by their hormones and break down in tears with only the slightest provocation. when a man behaves that way, it undermines his masculinity. it’s kind of sickening to see a man who is constantly weeping over the tiniest of things. if your dog dies, sure a good cry for a few minutes may be understandable. but to weep because Obama didn’t invite you to go golfing or to weep because the pope is giving a speech to congress or to weep on TV while reminiscing about starting out as a janitor... is really off putting.
This is all staged.
Too little and way too late for these frauds.
Some of the committee chairmen are pretty good.
There is a good chance a conservative will be selected as speaker now that the House conservatives have shown they will not support a RINO.
There is more. Trump has been openly critical of congressional leaders and has said they have to go.
Holy Crap! I just saw this!
Boehner’s legacy will now and forever be the biggest loser of Speakers of the House.
