A heroic student charged at the Oregon college shooter and was shot five times as he tried to save his classmates, his family said.

Army veteran Chris Mintz, 30, was taken to hospital following the massacre at Umpqua Community College on Thursday morning.

His cousin Derek Bourgeois told DailyMail.com that Mintz faced Chris Harper-Mercer, 26, who killed at least 10 people at the school in Roseburg.

“I’m not trying to tell you not to be afraid. Fear is normal. But stop worrying about it and about yourselves. Stop making plans. Forget about going home. Consider yourselves already dead. Once you accept that idea, it won’t be so tough.” - Gen. Frank Savage, “Twelve O’Clock High”

Chris Mintz understands this, which is why he ran towards the fire when everyone else wanted to run from it.

P.S. If Chris Mintz had been carrying a gun, more college students would be alive today.

Sadly, had there been a 2nd ‘hero’ on-scene, the distraction - and sacrifice - could have saved a lot of lives.

No besmirching of the victims intended; no one can predict how someone will react under such conditions...which is why it is most commonly those conditioned to those stresses that react accordingly (veterans, et al).

There was a thread here last night about him. Some people claimed that descriptions of the shooter in his account on a dating website had been changed after his death. Speculation was 4chan hackers.

Your description of your horrendous ordeal made me cry. Praying that our Lord Jesus will bring you comfort and that eventually your wife will be able to look down and smile to see you at peace.

A sheepdog, this one. Proud of him. And shame on the administrator who kept the other two armed vets from approaching. Frankly, I’m a bit surprised they didn’t just bull right past him/her.

I had a dream sort of vision months ago, I was at the top of some white steps, my son looked aged standing next to me, i walked down the steps to a city street, crossed it into a cafe of a sorts, had a chit chat with locals who seemed Australian.

Went next door to another building, Mollie was there but much younger, in her 20’s, and i think her son or a friend next to her.

And when i come up to her she says, “Its about time!”

Like a final scene from Titanic, so now here is the weird part, all summer long i had a fevered pitch about Australia, i bought the airfare and a voice said go to Adelaide.

I’m into motorcycles, mostly Goldwings, yesterday i had 18, sold one of them yesterday, but as i was watching a youtube go pro video of a motorcycle rider along a beach road south of Adelaide i saw a town with the big white staircase from a parking lot going to a street, and the same buildings and a cafe as in my dream.

I booked a vacation home just a couple of miles from there, will be leaving in early december fro Alaska, to Hawaii and then to Oz, and i have a feeling i’m not returning.

Bought a 40’ reefer van, all running motorcycles are in it, and tools, sold my 1985 Yamaha VMax and my 99 GMC Envoy yesterday, took a sizable chunk of dollars to the bank and ordered Aussie money.

My destiny awaits i supposed for whatever its worth.

I’m so sorry about your wife. This “stuff” coming down on our heads these days is fearful. I’d like to “carry”, but I
couldn’t hit the side of a barn on a bet & would just end
up shooting myself in the foot trying to holster the thing.

Daddy was an infantry soldier during WWII. I reckon he thought that if he didn’t teach me to shoot a gun, I wouldn’t have to go to war. - War seems to be dogging my heels these days & I’m 69 yrs. old.

If the students had swarmed the shooter, some would still have been shot, but probably fewer. The problem is that people realize that the one leading the charge is the most likely to be shot. No one wants to go first.

It brings to mind Aesop's fable about "who will bell the cat?" We all need to decide that if the situation ever arises, WE will bell the cat. Grab something, throw it, and charge. The others simply need to see the example. Most will follow a leader.
