Obama’s Syria Debacle
National Review ^ | 10/2/2015 | Charles Krauthammer

Posted on 10/02/2015 8:01:47 AM PDT by Servant of the Cross

If it had the wit, the Obama administration would be not angered, but appropriately humiliated. President Obama has, once again, been totally outmaneuvered by Vladimir Putin. Two days earlier at the United Nations, Obama had welcomed the return, in force, of the Russian military to the Middle East — for the first time in decades — in order to help fight the Islamic State.

The ruse was transparent from the beginning. Russia is not in Syria to fight the Islamic State. The Kremlin was sending fighter planes, air-to-air missiles, and SA-22 anti-aircraft batteries. Against an Islamic State that has no air force, no planes, no helicopters?

Russia then sent reconnaissance drones over western Idlib and Hama, where there are no Islamic State fighters. Followed by bombing attacks on Homs and other opposition strongholds that had nothing to do with the Islamic State.

Indeed, some of these bombed fighters were U.S. trained and equipped. Asked if we didn’t have an obligation to support our own allies on the ground, Defense Secretary Ashton Carter bumbled that Russia’s actions exposed its policy as self-contradictory. (snip)

In his subsequent news conference, Secretary Carter averred that he found such Russian behavior “unprofessional.”

Good grief. Russia, with its inferior military and hemorrhaging economy, had just eaten Carter’s lunch, seizing the initiative and exposing American powerlessness — and the secretary of defense deplores what? Russia’s lack of professional etiquette.

Makes you want to weep.

Krauthammer completely nails this one. With every 'dripping in sarcasm and disgust' exposure of the OccupyWH regime.

Ash Carter would not have gotten the job were he not 100% onboard with the Obama disengagement policy.

Pray for our troops. It’s obvious that NO ONE in this Admin cares about them.

we shouldn’t have trained them in the first place, but it IS embarrass that they kill the guys we trained

and Carter gets questioned if we have any obligations to them, and he blathers about God knows what.

I dont want to go to war over this thing but our allies must be thinking the USA is not dependable anymore as an ally.

Obama the clown never saw Putin coming.

and putin has such little respect for obama that he killed the guys we trained and probably laughed

Needed information: What has Assad done to the USA to justify our training and equipping anyone there? How do we know that the people we are training and equipping are significantly better than ISIS?

There’s nothing to worry about. John Kerry is going to talk to the Russians about deconflictation.

America came to this assistance of moslems in Serbia. But they did not come to the assistance of Christians in Syria or Iraq. Because of this, they have lost their moral authority.

Syria is friends with Russia, as is Serbia. That's why we bombed Serbia. That's why we want to bomb Assad too. I think that the US miscalculated something somewhere. That happens when you make alliances with the worst of all people on Earth.

It's a SAD DAY indeed when a Godless Soviet Communist Atheist like Putin ...

Fights to WIN against the Satanic Islamic Hordes ...

while the President of the United States is more interested in "Buggery" with Boy-Toy "Reggie".

What to do now? Since you can’t go back in time, I would remove any support troops we have in Syria. I would let the Russians support Assad to keep control of Syria and help destroy ISIS and the Syrian Rebels. Keeping Assad in power will help keep ISIS and the Syrian Rebels in-check. You don’t want any Radical Muslims to control Syria. The only issue with keeping Assad in power is that he is friendly with Iran and I am sure Iran is already helping him even more now in Syria. Iran would love to use Syria as a stepping stone to destroy Israel, so I would give any military support in weapons to Israel so that they can protect their Northern border with Syria and Lebanon. Defeating ISIS in Syria will also benefit to protect Jordon since ISIS would love to take over Jordon by going through Syria.

How did we get in this mess?

obama and hillary supported the Arab Spring effort to remove the dictators of Libya, Egypt, and Syria. Didn’t we learn from Iran when Jimmy Carter helped to remove the Shah of Iran and then assisted in helping put in the ayatollah khomeini? The Middle East and World sure changed after that Big Mistake!

There is also Carter and Reagan's support of Afghan terrorists. It's never right to support these lunatics. Even when they are fighting Russia or whomever.

Indeed. I’m trying to be mad at Putin but I can’t. Obama is such d$ckhead. I hope he doesn’t get a bunch of our brave young people killed. Sign of the cross.

It may be that Russia went into Syria to protect their port and their buddy Assad.

I just worry that all those oil deposits are so close to Syria.

I’m not a big fan of the Saudis, but having Putin in control of the number two and three oil producing areas is a bad idea.

At least somebody is killing the groups Obama had trained and equipped. The next U.S. president and administration would eventually have to do it. If somebody has to spend blood and treasure on the job I’d prefer it’s Russian blood and treasure. Maybe McCain can go over and tie himself to a fence post as a human shield?
