Oregon shooting: 13 legally purchased weapons found in gunman's cache
The Manchester Guardian ^ | October 2, 2015 | Lauren Gambino and Ben Quinn with Jason Wilson in Roseburg

Roseburg grapples with grief and indignation as Obama’s call for US gun control collides with horrifying new details of another mass shooting.

A cache of 13 weapons has been discovered in the possession of gunman who opened fire on a writing class at a community college in rural Oregon on Thursday, killing nine people and injuring seven in the deadliest mass shooting in the state’s history.

Seven weapons were recovered at the gunman’s home, in addition to the six weapons that were recovered on the campus of Umpqua Community College, Celinez Nunez, of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), told reporters during a Friday morning press briefing. A bulletproof jacket and five extra magazines were also recovered at the scene in Roseburg, Oregon, where residents, students, survivors and families were grappling with grief and indignation.

All 13 weapons were purchased legally by the shooter or a family member in the last three years, Nunez said, as a national debate reignited over long languishing gun control reforms. The Douglas County Sheriff’s department said on Twitter that investigators recovered five pistols and one rifle from the crime scene.

Douglas county sheriff John Hanlin said during the press conference that officials were still working to notify victims next-of-kin and said the medical examiner’s office was expected to release their names and brief biographies Friday afternoon.

Hanlin has refused to name the gunman out of deference to the victims and their families, and chastised the media for reporting his name, saying it “glorified” a murderer....

Christopher Merced is a half-black, leftist, anti-Christian homosexual just like our president.

That guy looks like someone you'd fully expect to see in a crowd of (so called) refugees in Europe.

Conceal carry was allowed on campus. Students weren’t allowed to carry per the Student Conduct Code.

In other words, no CC.

My guess is that non-students and non-employees could carry. IOW a target rich environment.

... I would think that only a person with a CC would have had time to react to prevent further violence

Probably true, which the non-CC rules on this campus may have compounded what happened. Indeed, the shooter, not knowing if someone might be carrying, may have not even attempted it. Can't say for sure.

No CC for students.

I really don't know, and I bounce back and forth on this. Apparently we feel they are old enough to vote, drive, drink, and serve in the military by the age they head off to college, so where's the logic in saying they shouldn't carry? I understand why the college has that rule in place. I also understand it didn't do a damn bit of good, either.

This savage is definitely NOT white. Probably stirred up by the 'black lives matter' idiots or a converted muzzie. We'll probably never know.

This whole thing will be swept under the rug.

I caught part of the press conference where the question was asked “Were all of the legally purchased firearms purchased by him”? The answer was no.

My grown son, who does not live with me, had gotten involved in drugs because of/and subsequently his wife left him. I could tell that he was having mental problems. He kept coming up with excuses to borrow my weapons because he thought people were after him. My weapons were well hidden during that time and if I left the house for a length of time I took them with me. I also helped him get counciling and he is ok now.

That’s what you do. Even though I respect his right to have a weapon I would have had him involuntarily evaluated if it came to thAt, fortunately it didn’t

I heard the aft ‘agent’ on the radio and she stated that they also recovered a “FLANK” vest with steel plates and 4 magazines. No mention if they were playboy, rolling stone, sports illustrated swim suit issue or modern muslim weekly.

I bet these things were much rarer prior to the 60’s.

Don't think they collected reliable stats much before 1980, at least most statistics seem to start there. Relative to population I'm not at all sure you're right, but if true you know the media would blame it on tighter gun laws.

This is the crux of the so called Mental illness concern. Charles Krauthammer said (when speaking about a different case of FOX) that in that case, even if the family wanted to involve the mental health agency they were not able to do it until a crime had been committed. Family members in this case probably would not have been sanguine with the guy having weapons, with the exception of the Mom who seemed OK with this. There are people who are mentally ill who can nevertheless convince people that they are OK to live on their own and have firearms. In this case I believe mental health treatment had been sought, this may have been enough to disqualify him if it had been recorded with the no purchase list.

My supposition is that a person who has had trouble with the social aspects of high school — which he did — probably should have his name on a list with some condition for evaluation before being allowed to buy firearms.

I have no problem with the number of firearms, although this may also have been a tip off if the information were in the right hands.

Without improvements to the mental health process we simply cannot rely on keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous people. Criminals already are on the list, and apparently the gun shop followed the rules and looked up the background to see if there were any red flags.

Failing this, the only choice left for our protection of places that are gun free zones — if we have communities who must have these — is to install more security and have them carry.

At this campus, there were a few who had concealed weapons, but not enough to cover the large area. The responders, to their credit went in immediately and engaged. The only better thing would have been a weapon among those in class who confronted the gunman.

Federally and in most states it requires involuntary commitment, or being adjudicated a danger to self or others, which usually involves commitment. Simply being mentally ill wouldn't be an issue, nor would homosexuality be an issue even if it was still considered a mentlal disorder.
