ROCKUMENTARY: OCTOBER 3, 1959
#66: The Clovers: Love Potion #9
The group was formed in high school in Washington (DC) in 1946. They appeared at local amateur shows including a show at R&B station WWDC. An introduction to Lou Krefetz, a record distributor who became their manager, led to their first recording session in 1950.
Krefetz brought them to the attention of Ahmet Ertegun at Atlantic Records, who signed them in February 1951. Throughout the early Fifties, they had one R&B hit after another.
After the expiration of their contract with Atlantic, Krefetz established Poplar Records, which was quickly bought by United Artists. By this time the band was beginning to sound more like the Coasters than their earlier sound.

#8: Johnny & the Hurricanes: Red River Rock
Beginning as the Orbits in Toledo (OH) in 1957, they were school friends who played on a few recordings behind a local rockabilly singer. Crossfire reached #23 on the charts in the summer of 1959. They followed with Red River Rock, a version of Red River Valley that earned them a Gold Record.

I say let it burn off and give me break.
The crop is in for the most part, time to do hogs and chop wood for winter.

#56: Frank Sinatra: High Hopes
A Hole in the Head was one of the big comedy box office successes of 1959 and was directed by Frank Capra, starring Frank Sinatra, Edward G. Robinson, Eleanor Parker, Keenan Wynn and Thelma Ritter. This song from the movie won an Oscar for Best Original Song. Its one of the great Sammy Cahn and Jimmy van Heusen efforts.
