Russias deputy chief of staff, Gen. Nikolay Bogdanovsky, accompanied by a large military delegation, arrives in Israel for a two-day visit on Tuesday, Oct. 6, to discuss increased coordination between the two militaries. However, Moscow seems to be sending Jerusalem an altogether different message: Friday, Oct. 2, the Russian Defense Ministry announced the surprise deployment of Navy cruiser, the Moskva, armed with 64 advanced anti-aircraft missiles S-300 ship-to-air missiles opposite the Syrian coastal town of Latakia. debkafiles military sources point out that Russia, without saying so publicly, has thus created an effective no-fly zone over most of Syria, most of northern Israel, including the Golan, as well as southern Turkey, for US aircraft based there for air strikes in Syria; Cyprus, the site of British air force bases; and Jordan.
Since 2012, The Obama administration has been discussing the possibility of establishing no-fly zones in northern and southern Syria on a number of occasions, but has shelved the plan whenever a decision was imminent. Now, with one move, Moscow has imposed a no-fly zone over Syria.
The presence of the wide-ranging S-300s means that the Turkish, British, Israeli and Jordanian air forces will need to coordinate their aerial operations in Syrian or Lebanese airspace with Russia, or face the risk of their planes being shot down.
In the view of debkafiles military sources, the only aircraft capable of evading those advanced missiles are stealth planes. Neither the Israeli, British, Jordanian or Turkish air forces, nor the US squadron in Turkey consisting of F-16 fighters, have such aircraft at their disposal.
The S-300 has a range of 150 kilometers and can shoot down any type of missile, including cruise missiles, as well as planes.

Israel probably has about two million citizens with close ties to the old Soviet Union.
Another topic for another thread perhaps, but yes, I think he is. One reason is because, he said he would:
Isaiah 17:Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, which shall not regard silver; and as for .... they come like men in battle formation to attack you, Daughter Babylon.
Another reason is because of the murder and promoting the murder of innocents and all manner of abominations. How long does anyone think he's going to allow a nation to get away with this?
Plain and simple; repent from these activities or face the consequences.
“Hopefully no American military will follow his orders to attack Israel because of it.”
This really had better not happen.
“They evidently fear that Obama might do something really stupid.”
Not stupid, but evil.
........exactly, the Israeli’s will sink that ship if a fight gets started. Remember the USS Liberty.
[In the view of debkafiles military sources, the only aircraft capable of evading those advanced missiles are stealth planes.]
If the Russians are firing at coalition aircraft the the No-Fly Zone has already failed.
Almost every nation state that touches water has submarines of one kind or another.
thass raciss
Yup. Real stupid of Obama to downsize our military. What now, maybe he's thinking he should have kept more craft? Oh well, stupid is as stupid does. That's Obama! He'll bring a golf club to a missile fight.
He gave Obama several YEARS to do something - and nothing was done. Now Israel is facing a real danger of Assad's regime running out of cash and people and collapsing. Then ISIS overruns it, loots the country, and... guess what? What would a good Jihadi do, standing a few feet away from Israel's border with a gun in hand and with nothing else to worry about? A Jihadi who is fed and financed by the combined wealth of at least two countries? Israel is well equipped for singular, accurate strikes, but they don't have enough manpower to wage a low-tech land war of the type that ISIS prefers.
I'm sure Israel has some conflict of interest with Assad; but the latter is a reasonable person, as opposed to the ISIS crowd. Additionally, Russian presence in Syria somewhat shifts the control away from Assad. One can always invite a foreign army to fight your war, but it's never free of consequences.
1/4 of Israel's population are Soviet Jews. Russia will not be fighting Israel - especially because there is little difference in interests of the two countries. The origins of enmity between USSR and Israel were rooted in the position that USSR chose at that time - to support Arabs who were promising to turn toward Socialism real soon now. As Israel beat those Arabs and imposed controls over Palestinians, it forced USSR to declare Israel a bad boy. After the fall of USSR Arabs went away, and the new state (Russia) is not bound by old, Soviet obligations and affiliations. As result, relations with Israel quickly improved, as Israel is one of precious few sane states in the Middle East.
I think the end goal that would satisfy both countries is simple: ISIS is destroyed; nearby countries are brought back under control (preferrably under native control by carefully chosen dictators Presidents,) and the area is made safe. This will also put an end to the US's experiment with democracy in those lands. Some countries are not yet ready for democracy, just like a baby is not yet ready to responsibly use their parents' credit card.
we agree.
it is always problematical when you have very advanced weaponry operating in close proximity....in this case,
it must be recalled.... Jerusalem has to (and will) continue operating aircraft there for both reconnisance (early warning) and occasional active missions (such as removing nuclear weapons factories, large missile arsenals, etc.).
Putin is an adult and he realizes this is reality. He also does not wish armed conflict with Israel as that would divert him from his larger strategic goals. And, he realizes that Jerusalem could inflict significant damage if provoked or if any circumstances threatened her.
SO, both Putin and Bibi ...two adults, altho very different and with obviously different goals......are doing all possible to communicate and coordinate to prevent accidental conflicts. They’ll have open channels for plane-to-plane communications as well as satellite and ground-based tracking and communications facilities, etc and etc. to prevent problems
should work...at least insofar as both militaries being well managed and operated.
The larger question would be, I think, is USA/Nato doing liekwise with Russia? Or, is all WashingtonDC doing is to threaten, blluster, and bullshit Russia? Putin has no time for that sort of childs’ play.
we will see.... (you sure don’t hear much about the Sixth Fleet these days, or Nato forces other than of course some Nato Ahole in Brussels shooting his mouth off threatening Russia like he was Kerry or Obama or McCain or Carly or? But those forces are there, and they had better have leadership to make the necessary arrangements.... or else.... there could be trouble none of us wants)
ISIS doesn’t surprise me any more. I see now that the King of SA clapped his hands and his blue eyed djinn appeared and he commanded him to create ISIS. It was the head chopping that kind of screwed the pooch on that one.
The Moskva is a shoot and scoot warship which is why its anti-ship missiles are stored on the outside. It’s really not suited to this role. One rogue warplane with a 23mm cannon can blow the ship away.
Jesus Obama has lost his halo. The emperor is naked. He’s gonna do something really stupid. Several somethings like start WW3 and gun confiscation simultainously so that his minions can raid America.
Tell that to the Russian general who said it. I'm just repeating it because I think he's right - not about being racist but because someone with 0's IQ or mentality should never ever have been allowed to gain control over the most powerful military force on the face of the earth.
Hell, he probably couldn't even buy a gun if he walked into a gun store today - how crazy is that???
Unfortunately I wouldn’t rule out him starting WWIII, the man is that dangerous.
That's what NK thought when they attacked and sunk the ROKS Cheonan. Who'd blame them if nobody saw the submarine?
In practice, though, all major local players are on board. Turkey is the least compliant one, but they were put on notice today by a small "navigational mistake" of a Su-30. Russia apologized, of course - words are cheap.
The USA is the only player who is not entirely in agreement about what's happening. We can also sink the ship, as there is no shortage of submarines [so far.] However it would be very obvious who did it, and - even if it doesn't start the World War III - one of our aircraft carriers may one day, entirely unexpectedly, hit a large floating mine that wasn't there a minute ago. Stones, glass houses... Among all the leaders today, Putin is probably not the safest to cross.
S-300s didn’t help last time the Israelis raided Syria...
{”They evidently fear that Obama might do something really stupid.”}
What makes them think the Muslim-in-Chief would do something stupid?:)
