Targeting those opposed to Assad is merely clearing the battle space for ground operations. That way the forces on the way to engage ISIS or whoever; don't have to look over their shoulders or worry about rear-guard actions.
Makes sense. And who really cares how many sons of Islam they send up in flames or those who support them. The more of them the Rooskies or anybody else kills means less of them targeting us and whatever friends we have left over there.
The opposition to Assad has been rife with Al Quada.
And everyone knows this now!
