The federal government will announce a new plan requiring anyone buying a drone to register the device with the U.S. Department of Transportation, NBC news has learned.
The government has been concerned about the rise in close calls between unmanned drones and aircraft flying into and out of some of the nation's biggest airports. The plan is expected to be announced Monday.
In July, there was a dangerously close encounter between a drone and a passenger jet with 159 people aboard setting up to land at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport.

"No license is required to fly a "Part 103 legal ultralight".
FAA Part 103 Ultralights must have an empty weight less than 254 lbs (plus an extra weight allowance for Ballistic Parachute, floats, etc.)
Add the weight of a big pilot and 5 gal of fuel and you have an unlicensed 500+ pound object "terrorizing the "Public Skies" and making flying & life itself hazardous for innocent civilians, women, children and minorities!"

Given no law on this it can easily be thrown out in court for any business or person not complying.
If they can do this, we would be forced to register our guns to the federal government now.
A license does not make one a good driver. Paying attention to what you are doing and a little common sense does.
We would have died before we hit someone or something because our privilege would have stopped right there. Same with operating a boat.
Where I see registration going with drones is that if there is a problem, and you are a registered owner in the area, expect a visit from the authorities. It doesn't mean you were the problem, just that you will be scrutinized, at the least.
Of course, (illegal) unlicensed drones might be the source the problem (and of your pain), but that never stopped the authorities from leaning on the people who did things right.
I think the parallel with firearm ownership becomes apparent at that point.

OH BOY! Register drones huh? I guess that will work as well as registering guns so that only people who pass the “drone test” can fly one. Better yet, there will be national drone schools funded by exorbitant fees to be paid by the prospective pilots in or to get their license.
The only way to control drones is the same as controlling crows....with a shotgun.
How does registering a drone stop them from being flown at airports? How many responsible hobbiiests are being punished for the delinquent few?

And what do you do with the drones that already out there?
Guess they will require them to send ID as part of their telemetry; something like transponders on aircraft.

Drives me crazy! They wait until morning/afternoon traffic peak, then drive on the only main road around (speed limit 55, basically no safe passing areas) and back traffic up for fifteen miles, on a road that you can normally do 60 - 65 on to get to work with no traffic. This is a very rural area, with tons of back roads they could use, but no, they have to inconvenience the entire community and create extremely unsafe conditions. I do not know why the police don't pull them over; they would pull me over for creating a mess like this. There are many Amish buggies too, but you can easily see around those and pass them, but when something is already extending into the oncoming traffic lane and is fifteen feet or more high, you can't see anything.
I talked with local police ata coffee shop shortly after a near accident. They were the one’s who explained that because they were farm vehicles they were under the authority of no state laws. Told me if I had a few hours they would tell me stories to make me as furious as they are frustrated.
