Ever since Rodney King, cops across the country have been trading in their billy clubs for tasers. Unlike the tried-and true club, mankind's first weapon, a taser is a complicated piece of technology that requires training to use.
When it doesn't function as designed, the sidearm is all too often the next, quickest alternative.
You are absolutely correct about that. And a baton can keep an aggressive person at bay even without striking him in the torso. But the powers that be have declared batons to be evil (the Rodney King video had something to do with that, if I recall correctly). So as you noted, it's usually now either taser or gun.
But I do wonder, did the cop in this case attempt to use pepper spray?
My sister had a ticket tossed out in court the other day because the cop didn’t show up for court.
She was prepared and had gone to the legal store and gotten the paperwork in order for a motion to dismiss. She, the Judge, and prosecutor all agreed that the accuser wasn’t there and that was the end of it.
Just ignore that and stay with us.
No argument from me. There is plenty of stupidity to go around here for both sides. But throwing repeated punches at a uniformed guy with a gun wins the stupid contest in this particular case.
IMHO, there are two equally important lessons to be learned from this tragic incident.
Lesson one is for cops: Don't bother anyone who is doing nothing wrong.
Lesson two is for everybody else. And it's what you said above.
Why didn’t the kid comply ?

He was killed for driving while white and being a possible militia member.
With certain cops, it is whatever THEY say it is.
The kid was a dumb kid, but that’s what emotional, adolescent kids are.
This was a BAD cop who is no better than the Black Lives Matter crowd- he set up the problem and agitated til it was out of control.
HE was the authority and it’s his job to maintain the law, the peace and the situation. He did what a community “organizer” does. Stirred up trouble.
Hope he gets what’s coming to him.
Either booze, getting caught and trying to evade, or plain stupidity and macho insanity, in every case I deserved to be roughly handled.
We can argue about the amount of force that was applied, but not who instigated the use of force.
Never try to win a pissing contest with a cop, unless you are prepared to go all out, in which case, you will face the death penalty, when caught, tried and convicted.
Most likely, he won’t. He’ll be protected and lionized.

You're right, that's the money sentence. Either the cop is a liar, and that's the first thing that popped into his head. Or he truly believes that all white kids are evil militia members.
Ether way, if I was on a jury, I'd give that cop zero benefit of the doubt. Zero.

Yes, because in a reasonable world, cops just let people beat the crap out of them without ever resorting to lethal force. You should adjust your expectations.
I've taught my kids to turn lights on and off rather than use high low .... principally because as a retired big truck driver ... we are often gravely eyed at night and a high beam in our mirror can really hurt

I watched the video, and the cop was looking for trouble
His fellow troopers should have a deadly blanket party and send a signal
We The People Of The United States no longer need "the law" to justify righteousness
Truth be known ..."the law" has nothing to do with righteousness, but everything to do with retaliating against the "wrong doers" of (in some ... many ... cases) ... invented infractions

This kid, trayvon martin, michael brown...all high on pot, attack armed people, get shot... I see a pattern.
The article says the boy was a teen but the picture shows him to be white.
