The idea that conservatives would be nowhere without Ryan is absurd at face value. Ryan had nothing to do with the 2010 national sweep of elections. He was a beneficiary of the results. I became a fan of Ryan’s before then, and thought they had a fairly good strategy post 2010 with his budget. He was really good at getting on TV and talking rationally up against irrational hosts.

The fact is, their strategy between 2010 and 2012 failed in a major way. The House-passed budgets were ok, but the ensuing tug-of-war with the White House gave the Obama campaign the advantage going into to 2012 and they won....with a lackluster Senate and House performance. Somehow crediting Ryan for conservatives success is simply incorrect.

The only argument for Ryan at this point is that there really isn’t another realistic alternative. If someone floated Ryan’s name for SOTH in 2011, I would have been giddy. Since then, he’s really been lackluster, a tools of Boehner’s and of the big government/big business/big money influences. His stock is way down.

I suppose we can be hopeful and that he shows some leadership and presents a refreshed strategy. We have to hope the conservatives have expressed their expectations and will hold him to it. This is close to the Republican’s last chance before they become a non-factor, so I hope that weighs on Mr. Ryan as much as the forces of the left and big money will weigh on him to raise spending, expand government and sell out to big money. The one thing that I like is that he has the ability to communicate quite well, if he choses to try to persuade voters on some issues. We haven’t had that in a long time on our side. Here’s hoping to a reinvigorated Ryan who wants to actually create a list of accomplishments and not simply pleasing the opposition.

“The only argument for Ryan at this point is that there really isn’t another realistic alternative.”

You are absolutely wrong. The position of Speaker is a “management” position, not a pandering position. Also, there is no requirement that the Speaker be an elected official. The time has come that we need a non-political manager for the House who is not corrupted nor influenced by money or “favors” and who is not beholding to special interests.

The reason that Trump is so wildly popular with the conservatives is that he cannot be bought. Ryan is totally bought and paid for and will absolutely do the bidding of all that enhance his personal wealth, esteem and political opportunities.

We watched the Republicans throw away all the trust we had in them after we overwhelmingly elected them last time and they fully expect us to do the same next time.

The placement of Ryan as Speaker signs the death warrant for freedom and liberty for all of us.

Call me at 943-668-4932 and I will tell you about an amazing offer I have that makes pancakes from cow patties. If you are that “hopeful” you will probably imagine that they really taste like pancakes.

Ryan was such a wimp so why would anyone want him for the job? If he wants to be with his kids fine. If because of that he does not have the ability to do the job full time fine. He should then just shut up and go away so someone who is not there to work on occasion can do the job.

Paul Ryan is such a Caitlyn. What a girl with little bitty testicles he is.

If Ryan “cannot and will not give up my family time” then he should not be in Washington in the first place. He should be elsewhere.

Oh, by the way, Congress only works 130 days a year. What a pu$$y.

Is it Conservative to cut vet benefits? Campaign for Obama’s TPA/TPP? Campaign for amnesty with Luis Gutierrez? Support Ex-IM bank corporate welfare slush fund? You want more awful Paul Ryan positions? I can get them for you.

Paul Ryan’s record the past three years stinks and you are being willfully blind to it.

Frankly, I see nothing conservative about Paul Ryan post 2012 election. He’s a beltway careerist with no interest in Main Street.

If you have ever really looked at one of Ryan’s BS budget proposals which I actually took the time to do they are pie in the sky. He’s no budget wonk by any stretch of the imagination.

The thing I love about Paul Ryan and every other establishment shill is that they always have a plan to cut Social Security and Medicare but can never bring themselves to name an unnecessary or rogue govt agency they could bear to part with. They can never seem to remember to cut welfare, food stamps and every other bloated handout either.

Given his published voting record, how can you say that?

I have to ask why you keep repeating that line. If Ryan is main stream conservative, am I to understand that to mean every ‘main stream conservative’ supports amnesty? Just asking for some clarity here. Thanks

not every conservative supports every conservative effort to the same degree

to assume conservatism is a totally and perfectly homogeneous ideology is in error. no where is that more in evidence than here on Free Republic where the variance is shown every single hour.

the point you raise about amnesty is a case in point. there is wide variance on how the situation must be dealt with. the only agreement, near universal agreement, is the borders must be closed.

to demand all of what you want when you lack the raw political power to achieve it is foolish. take today what can be obtained and then fight the other battles on a different day when the results of closing the border can be cranked into the equation.

Irrefutable. Interesting irony here. It’s that sort of arrogance that’s put the GOP where it is right now.

He’s wrong on immigration - completely. The left loves him. He’s another ‘manana’ leader. Conservatives will see the rule of law restored in the US . . . someday.

The rule of law needs to be restored in the US by Sunday, not someday.
