My reading is the opposite of yours. 71% say it is *not* a sham.
No @ 80.79%, Yes @ 19.21%
It is still stunning to see how the left can get the media to back up their narrative.
“Too young to recall: What did Republicans say at the time of the investigations into Nixon?”
The reactions among Republicans and Independents tended to be split far more than you see with today’s Democrats and along the lines of 1. the Democrat-like loyalty whether guilty or not, 2. disbelievers of guilt, 3. doubtful of guilt until proven otherwise beyond reasonable doubt, 4. doubtful of guilt by a preponderance of the evidence, 5. uncertain of guilt or innocence, 6. possibly guilty, and 7. definitely guilty of one or more felonies. The percentages in each category underwent considerable shifts as more revelations were reported and/or invented by the news media.
And the “loyalty no matter what” crowd: did they express their displeasure with the investigation by saying it is just a partisan sham meant to discredit Nixon? I mean, today that’s the only thing I am hearing from Democrats: “Shut it down because it’s a partisan sham!” It is the sound of desperation.
It’s the sound of knowing the media has your back.
“And the loyalty no matter what crowd: did they express their displeasure with the investigation by saying it is just a partisan sham meant to discredit Nixon?”
You better believe they did, and in no uncertain terms. They tried to turn everything into a highly polarized test of loyalty: rural redneck short haired true conservative beer guzzling males versus urban callow skinny long haired effete fancy drinking and pot smoking Commie males and dirty liar unionized miner-farmer workers. Nothing in between or mixed allowed, and the same attitude on the opposite anti-redneck side of the political spectrum. As bad as the politics are today, they are far more nuanced among voters today just as they are far more polarized among politicians today.
I find some comfort in your reply insofar as no matter how loudly the words “partisan sham” rang out in Nixon’s day, he ultimately had to leave office, albeit for a seemingly minor offense. On the other hand, decades of public education have numbed the United States citizen to the unique privileges attend to life within our borders, so the likelihood of change for the better seems more remote in our time.
Unfortunately, some Republicans and many Independents are far more amenable to rational persuasion than any of the multitude of Democrats I have ever known. The same tends to be true among many former Democrats who became converts to the Republicans. The behavior has been such a stark difference, it has often prompted the question of whether or not there really is a physical cause for a mental difference in such political behavior regardless of the political labels. We have all seen this behavior where you have the most bizarre forms of cognitive dissonance and habitual lies imaginable.
Not worth our trouble : )
Nope.
Merely proof of concept though.
The meme has gone out. I expect few if any of our ‘side’ to counter it.
Well good, that means in a little over an hour the tide has turned. I assure you that when I posted it the yes was 71#.
Matter of fact, now the no’s are at 86%
