I have to disagree there.

Kildall got the same offer from IBM suits that Gates did, to supply an operating system for the nascent IBM PC. Kildall, however, turn them down cold and was as arrogant as he could possibly be. You see, he was already making what he thought was big money from CP/M and didn’t want to give anything away to potential competitors. Not realizing, of course, that IBM had the resources to cut him off at the knees.

Gates didn’t have any OS to give to the IBM guys, but he did know a fellow across the street who did. He bought DOS from that dude for $30,000 and his team began immediately tailoring it to work on the PC.

Now if you want to talk about the Windows GUI, yeah, that was practically a robbery.
